  Drummerworld: Alan White
In a way it was neither musician's fault — Bruford was considered, after Carl Palmer, the hottest drummer in England, while White had, in the public's perception, played in a few highly visible bands and gigs without a lot of acclaim.
The group's original drummer, Bill Bruford, had already carved out a name for himself in four years with the group that made him the idol of tens of thousands of aspiring drummers around the world.
Bruford was represented on a handful of tracks, but White was the drummer on most of the material, including the all-important (and new) Close to the Edge material.

 FFWD Weekly - August 14, 2003
Despite a 12-year career that saw them begin as the next big thing and remain in the garden of critics’ darlings for most of their time together, the band is taking a hard look at where they are and where they wish to be.
Scott says the band is "pretty successful" because being in Sloan is the only real job they’ve had, but he’s tired of the holding pattern the band’s been in for the past nine years.
Scott says that it helps that the band splits everything an even four ways, no matter who brings the songs to the table, and that the band’s relationship with BMG is good.

Vega, 41, died at home of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound on the eve of a scheduled April 8 appearance with Taylor on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," according to a published report.
Drummer Steve Jordan, a friend of Vega's since the '80s, says Vega was "a stabilizing force in any group that he played in, which is the reason this thing is so shocking to everyone, because the circumstances of his departure were so incongruous with his life, at least the way we saw it."
Jazz guitarist Ritenour was among the first to recognize Vega's talent and hire the young drummer to record and perform professionally.

Sloan's (from left) Jay Ferguson, Andrew Scott, Patrick Pentland, and Chris Murphy each had a turn in the spotlight.
Even on the midtempo, moody "Everybody Wants You," drummer Andrew Scott attacked his kit, hitting his drums as though it was the hardest-rocking song on the set list.
Such urgency is vital to a band's survival (and sanity) after 15 years, and the constant shifting of the spotlight from one member to another prevented anyone from getting too cozy or antsy.

It has often been noted that Sloan is “big in Canada,” but when the subject of the pop masterminds’ popularity on their native soil is broached, singer-drummer Andrew Scott is quick to clarify the definition.
Scott says the band viewed this album from a wide-open perspective; it was without an American label, and its Canadian deal with Sony/BMG is for distribution only, so it was determined to make this album, first and foremost, for itself.
One of Sloan’s hallmarks has always been the fact that all four members are songwriters, and with this album they decided to open the floodgates and let the material flow.

Backed by nothing more than his workmanlike guitaring and Scott's drums (a setup it shares with the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and the White Stripes; only not as rough and ragged), Murphy weaves a tale about an intense teenage beauty who uses her good lucks to make all of those around her better.

So what follows is an overview of the process I use to create drum tracks without drummers, based on a few years of trial and error.
These are pretty neat, but I don't use them, mainly because 1) they're never precisely on the beat (although there are now programs like ACID and ReCycle that can align loop samples to measures) and 2) it's harder to do transitions, like from verse to chorus and back, without having it sound weird and abrupt.
Remember that the majority of drummers are right-handed, so everything played with the right hand will be slightly stronger than that played with the left.
