Andrew Sullivan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Andrew Sullivan, Ph.D. (born August 10, 1963) is an English-American journalist, author, blogger, and former editor of The New Republic, known both for his heterodox personal-political identity (HIV-positive, gay, conservative, and practicing Roman Catholic) and for his efforts in the field of blog journalism.
Andrew Sullivan is also a popular speaker at major universities and civic organizations in the United States and a frequent guest on many national news and political commentary television shows in the United States and Europe.
Andrew Sullivan is especially critical of Mel Gibson, considering the actor to be a misogynist, homophobe, and anti-Semite.

 Salon.com News | Andrew Sullivan's jihad
Sullivan was as incensed by Sontag's remarks as he was by my introductory comments about the efforts of Sullivan's conservative colleagues to banish her from the world of acceptable intellectual discourse.
Earlier this year, Sullivan was exposed by the gay press for advertising for "bareback" sex (unprotected by condoms) in an AOL chat room and denounced as a hypocrite by his liberal gay critics for engaging in risky sexual practices after attacking President Clinton for his own incautious behavior.
Sullivan's Taliban style of argument and his rigid habit of separating the world into the blessed and the damned turns American politics into a free-fire zone where any deviation from his view of the national program is immediately leveled.

Andrew Sullivan momentarily paused in his perenniel campaign of demanding kinder treatment for cuththroats to second the leftwing blogosphere’s posterboy of prolixity, Glenn Greenwald, in attacking the amiable Glenn Reynolds.
Sullivan’s principled libertarianism shows particularly well by contrast with the stance taken by Ilya Somin, one of the commentators at the Volokh Conspiracy, who equates the conventional religious view of homosexuality as “deviant” with racism, and thinks Smith’s firing was justified as:
Andrew Sullivan (foreign transplant, defector from Conservatism, and spokesperson for a special perspective) gloatingly took the occasion of former House Majority Leader Tom Delay’s announcement to rub it in, titling his little screed “ding_dong” (the witch is dead) in archest friend-of-Dorothy style:

I never actually expected to receive Andrew Sullivan's promised response to my piece about him, but I would have hoped that he'd begin conducting his end of the marriage debate with even the slightest indication that he's paying attention to what the other side is saying...
To Sullivan, on the other hand, marriage is a mechanism to gain "personal integrity" and "dignity," to become "fully human." A major source of friction between these two approaches is the effect that the latter's understanding of marriage might have on the ability to achieve the goals of the former.
Sullivan's writing overflows with appeals to equality untinted by distinctions, as when he rejects "the mealy-mouthed talk about civil unions as some sort of options for gay citizens." The exclusion of same-sex couples is indefensible when, he says (incorrectly), "the living, breathing reality of civil marriage in America" is coupling and nothing more.

Sullivan, it means that He is calling us to refrain from exercising our sexual appetites (even though the directions of the appetites are different, the call is still the same), and to repent when we fall.
Sullivan's stated reason for leaving the Catholic Church is that he cannot continue as a Catholic because 1) the Church holds to a teaching that certain actions of his are sinful; and 2) he is unwilling to repent, if necessary again and again, for these actions.

ANDREW SULLIVAN seems to think that I should be blogging more about Abu Ghraib, and less about the Newsweek scandal.
Andrew has chosen the role of emoter-in-chief on these subjects, and he's welcome to it, though he would be more convincing in that part if he didn't count wrapping people in the Israeli flag as torture.
When Andrew was a champion of the war on terror, writing about martial spirit and fifth columns composed of the "decadent left," did he believe that nothing like Abu Ghraib would happen, when such things (and much worse) happen in prisons across America (and everywhere else) on a daily basis?

Sullivan has, moreover, been the target of much gay ire over the conservative content of his writings in The New York Times Magazine, where its editors inexplicably allowed him--slyly but effectively--to out a whole host of allegedly gay Democratic politicians, including Clinton Cabinet members, along with liberal talk-show host Rosie O'Donnell.
Beyond the confines of his bathroom, Sullivan's singular obsession appears to be the crushing of any hint of democratic debate about the war.
Sullivan recently announced to his acolytes that he plans to write less in order to play Benedick in a Washington production of Much Ado About Nothing in a pair of fl leather pants.

Even with the freedom blogs offer, Sullivan reminded the audience that he is dependent on classic reporting because the very nature of blogging calls for issues to be commented on and responded to.

Andrew Sullivan, who yanked some parchment from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, today cites a piece from Robert Nozick on why intellectuals have long displayed a greater affinity with the left than with the right.
Of course, the question Sullivan doesn’t ask, perhaps because it hits just a little too close to home, is why anti-intellectuals love the right wing and why the right wing is just fine with that, thank you very much.

Sullivan also played a key role in repeating false claims about Bill Clinton's Georgetown speech without having actually seen the speech (he later moderated his comments after reading a transcript).

What's so bizarre about Andrew's line of attack is that two months ago he wrote a piece attacking NR for being TOO criticial of the Bush-led occuptation in Iraq (we said, among other things, that “the Bush administration has shown a dismaying capacity to believe its own public relations”).
