Jan Both came from Utrecht, where he studied with Bloemaert before moving to Italy for a period of about four years, 1637-1641.
Jan's brother Andries (1612-41) lived with him in Rome 1639-41; they are said to have collaborated, but Andries is best known for paintings and drawings of lively peasant scenes that have little in common with Jan's idyllic tone.
What became more and more important both to him and the painters around him was the mood a landscape might evoke in the beholder.

Andries and Jan Both were Utrecht painters who, according to Sandrart, worked together, with Andries painting the figures in Jan's landscapes, until one day Andries fell into a canal in Venice on his way home from a party.

Having been a choirboy he was later choirmaster at Notre Dame, Courtrai, in 1565-85 (apart from a period when Calvinists controlled the city), and then at Notre Dame in Antwerp.
He published five volumes of chansons in a serious style more akin to the madrigal or motet; though never visiting Italy he both wrote madrigals and edited an anthology of them in 1583.
His church music in up to eight parts shows the influence of the doublechoir style; four of his sacred pieces are legibly portrayed in contemporary paintings.
