In 1836 the Ndebele were in the path of a trekker expedition heading northwards and led by Andries Hendrik Potgieter.
Potgieter, still anxious to legitimise his settlement, concluded a vredenstraktaat or peace treaty in 1845 with Sekwati, chief of the Pedi, whom he claimed had ceded all rights to an undefined stretch of land.
For example, the northern half of Transorangia went to Andries Potgieter in early 1836 for a few cattle and a promise to protect the Taung chief, Makwana, from the Ndebele.

Potgieter was to serve in the Zoutpansberg and Andries Pretorius's son in the Magaliesberg, while two other burghers were appointed for the Lydenburg and Marico districts.
For the old feud between Potgieter and Pretorius went on and on, and by 1852 it had come to wear a curious air of permanency; indeed it had been inflamed again rather than allayed by Pretorius's diplomatic success at Sand river.
Potgieter rode to Pretorius's stronghold at Rustenburg, and as judicous intermediaries flitted up and down he was persuaded to enter his rival's tent.

An expedition led by Andries Hendrik Potgieter headed for Delagoa, leaving their women and children, with the unwieldy trek wagons, on the malaria-free hills of the Transvaal Drakensberg, near Graskop, to await the return of the men.
When the agreed time for their return was long past with no sign of them the women thought that something must have happened to the expedition and named the river by which they were camping the Treurrivier, the "River of Sorrow".
Soon after setting out for Ohrigstad they were overtaken by Potgieter and his men, who had found the route to the sea they had been looking for but had taken longer than expected to find it.

First there was Andries Hendrik Potgieter, the Bibletoting Voortrekker who founded the town in 1838.
Potgieter's arrival followed his victory against the Matabele in the Nine Day War of November 1837.
The more convincing explanation is derived from old Dutch documents that refer to the town as Potscherfstroom (literally, 'pot fragment stream'), suggesting that the earliest arrivals found fragments of indigenous pottery near the stream they called the Mooi River.

The Rooi Leenderd branch were followers of their cousin Andries Hendrik Potgieter, and may possibly have shared their leader's dissatisfaction at this new course of direction, as they had their hearts set on moving further north--away from British influence.
In light of the need for unity, however, it was decided that the Potgieter trek would follow the Retief, Uys and Maritz treks, who were already streaming towards the Drakensberg mountains which separates the Transvaal highveld from the lowlands of Natal.
