Conservative Party (South Africa) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Conservative Party of South Africa (known in Afrikaans as Konserwatiewe Party van Suid-Afrika) was formed in 1982 as a breakaway from the ruling National Party.
Led by Andries Treurnicht, a former Dutch Reformed Church minister, popularly known as 'Doctor No', it drew support from white South Africans, mostly Afrikaners, who opposed Prime Minister PW Botha's reforms, which they saw as a threat to European rule and the racial separate development system, commonly known as apartheid.
It became the official opposition in the whites-only Parliament in the elections of May 6, 1987, ousting the liberal Progressive Federal Party.

By treading a delicate balance, some improvement in education was provided through the 1984 National Policy for General Affairs, in which funding between racial groups narrowed, and penalties were lifted on those defying Bantu Education Laws.
