Andrija Štampar (September 1, 1888 - June 26, 1958) was a distinguished scholar in the field of social medicine from Croatia.
Andrija was born in Drenovac near Pleternica, at the time part of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, in modern Virovitica-Podravina county.
During his secondary schooling, Andrija was a brilliant pupil and, at that time, he wrote his first literary attempt, published in the periodical Pobratim in 1902.

 Professor Martin McKee wins 11th Stampar Medal
Martin McKee is Professor of European Public Health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine where he manages a research programme focused on health and health policy in Europe, in particular central and eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.
He is Co-Director of the European Centre on Health of Societies in Transition (ECOHOST), a World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre specialising in health and health care in the countries of central and eastern Europe, as well as editor-in-chief of the European Journal of Public Health.
The medal is awarded by the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER) and is named after Dr Andrija Stampar from Croatia who was involved in the establishment of the the World Health Organisation and who later became chairman of the first WHO General Assembly in 1948.

"Andrija Stampar" Library is one of the oldest public health libraries in this part of the world, founded in 1927.
Except for very rare old books that can be found in the Library, thanks to Professor Stampar and his connections all over the world and especially with the World Health Organization and the Rockefeller Foundation, stock of journals missing from the period during the Second World War when the Library was closed, was completed.
Thus it became a very important and unique public health library not only in the Republic of Croatia but elsewhere.

The Andrija Štampar School of Public Health is known for its efforts in helping to improve the health of the people in Croatia, as well as those in other countries around the world.
They used this event, dubbed "The Largest Breakfast - Dalmatian Breakfast", as a symbolic reminder of the need to share food with those who do not have enough, and to raise awareness that 800 million people in the world are hungry.
