Topic: Androcracy

Feminist Critiques and Visions of the Future
Androcracy has been the dominating model for millennia but our era is characterized by a renewal of partnership wherein a strong movement towards more balanced types of social organization already exist (most notably in the Scandinavian world).
Since any society is going to have some violence, what distinguishes the partnership model from androcracy is lack of institutionalization and idealization of violence (the main purpose of which is to maintain rigid rankings of domination), and lack of stereotypes of masculinity and femininity.
Since this is happening within the dominator cultural cognitive maps, humans have the ability to destroy all life on this planet.

Women's access to political power should be analysed, independently of other contraints, in its relation to the social model sustained and reproduced through and under androcracy.
Pervading social relations between men and women, androcracy constitutes the foundation of gender inequality.
The chapter explains how the elements of conflict at the different levels of social and political reality influence the emergence of three distinct forms of occupying the political field.

I believe that the most important sudden change we could try to understand is the one in which the patriarchal paradigm -- androcracy -- swept over the Gailany, the planetary society based on goddess religion which had existed for milennia.
This, as many people now believe, was the sudden change that put us on an evolutionary death track from which our escape requires the recovery of the Gailanic past.
A lot of values associated with the Goddess had to be disposed of at that time, but they are not disposable, being universal truths.

From the Blade to the Chalice
The roles of both women and men will be far less rigid, allowing the entire human species a maximum of developmental flexibility.
Practices like female sexual mutilation, wife beating, and all the other brutal ways through which androcracy has kept women "in their place" will be seen not as hallowed traditions but as what they are – crimes spawned by domination and cruelty.
Wars, terrorism, and other forms of violence will no longer be glorified as 'heroic" in epics and myths but condemned for what they are – the barbaric aberrations of a species turned against itself.

They brought with them warrior gods bearing lightning, for light from the sky was preferable to dark from the earth (or perhaps their whiter skin preferable to the darker peoples they conquered).
The shift from the Copper Age to the Bronze Age (3500-2500 BCE) brought better hoes and axes to the gylanic agriculturists of Old Europe and sharper swords and spears to the androcratic pastoralists.
Although the androcracy defends its control to the death, it is a regime that we as a human race cannot survive.

Belili Productions - Riane Eisler Bio
She is president of the Center for Partnership Studies in Northern California, where she lives with her husband.
Riane coined the term "Dominator Culture" to describe the conflict between an androcracy (governance of social organization dominated by males) versus what she proposes was a partnership model (as distinct from matriarchy) for the social organization of ancient cultures.
To support the idea that neither men nor women dominated one another in the distant past, Eisler cites archaeological evidence from southeast Europe, especially Crete, drawing much from the research of Marija Gimbutas and V. Gordon Childe.

Indeed, what is needed, I believe, is the cohesion of intimacy without the dominance of androcracy.
Riane Eisler has pointed the way to a "return" by way of the gentleness of an inner balance, a kind of gylanic mutuality and an authentic conciliation -- or reconciliation.

They would be her attendants in household activities as well as love-making.
The sisterly relationship among loving women created a support system that certainly sweetened life during the long, iniquitous reign of the androcracy.
Thus the wretched pathos of androcracy could be passed from generation to generation.

I hope the people who are living the partnership way will take time out to read The Chalice and the Blade and especially Tomorrow's Children.
Having said that I have found that Sacred Pleasure is hard to find, which isn't surprising - sex is tabu, as is death, despite androcracy being a death cult - it hides the big one and the little very well.
That one will be next on my list, though I'll have to visit a different library system.

Equally, make-up on men blurs the boundaries many rely on for their own sense of identity within the world.
Although female equality has made great progressions within the last century, Western society is still an androcracy, where men remain the dominators, the First Sex.
If being male was of less cultural import, gender classification itself would also be less significant.

I assumed any company hip enough to use the motto "for girls who aren't afraid of a mouse" would give good content.
So, with the exception of a few exemplary gender-neutral companies like Wild Planet and Broderbund, my daughter has had three options: traditional play in a world without men; boy play in an androcracy; or a girl ghetto of low-content computer games.
Who'd have thought that gender divisions would be so rigid at the turn of the millennium -- after the WNBA and Xena?

I have this thing about people who profoundly investigate the co-option of Western society's images symbolism by the Judeo-Christian androcracy...
Doesn't that provide some fundamental evidence for where we derive a value structure that deems "higher" functions to be "more evolved"?
As Eisler strives to elucidate the impact of Judeo-Christian androcracy on our societal images of how-things-are, shouldn't we strive for language that only continues those images with explicit intent, not through un-thinking common usage?

Brian Hayden has claimed the superiority of a number of unproven assumptions, such as: Old European societies were chiefdoms controlled by "Big Men"; warfare was endemic to Old European (pre-Indo-European) society; and the Neolithic arts were created as prestige items for competing males.
Gimbutas saw the Old European cultures as egalitarian, primarily peaceful, with a wealth of artistic expression that reflected a sophisticated veneration of the cycles of life, death, regeneration (which she called Goddess); the transition to androcracy took place after the 5th millennium B.C. Keller and Gimbutas are accused by Hayden of resembling "born again" fundamentalists.
While every new theory must withstand the scrutiny of skeptical colleagues, the emotionalism and sense of righteous disgust and name-calling exibited by Hayden does not promote a balanced, objective discourse so essential to this field.

That is to say, it is the Rule of the Fathers -- those men who exist in a position of power over other men and over all women.
The chimeric carrot is the deliberate lie that "patriarchy" translates to "androcracy," that any man can participate in the power structure to his own benefit.
The Fathers of our Nation, City Fathers, the Heads of the Armed Forces, the Captains of Industry -- all stand in this position of patronage, of "benevolent" despotism which must, as its corollary, reduce the men under them to children, the women under all of them to infants, and children to mere beasts for use.
