And yet in their brief hour, they lead us with terrific clarity and intensity through the story of the young King Pyrrhus’s crazed love for his prisoner Andromache, the captured widow of the great Trojan warrior Hector, and of the ferocious jealous rage of his promised bride Hermione.
It’s as if the limitations of these movements only add to their fierce intensity, and to the sense that at any moment the story may end, fixing the characters where they are for all eternity.
Although Edinburgh may have seen more accessible versions of Andromache, I doubt if it has ever seen one that strips the story more cleanly to its essentials; or gives us such a sense of how sexual love, misplaced or unrequited, can become the most tragic and destructive force of all.
