In Jean Racine’s Andromache, a "closed-circuit" situation exists in that all the action of the play depends on the interaction of its four principal characters: Orestes, Hermione, Pyrrhus, and the title role of Andromache herself.
Racine’s play Andromache has sometimes been called a "Jansenist tragedy," even though its theme is drawn from Greek mythology and its characters are therefore pre-Christian.
Century B.C.), after the fall of Troy Hector’s mournful but ineffectual widow Andromache was given as a prize to Achilles’ son (called Pyrrhus in Racine’s version), who immediately had a son by her, Molossos, sole object of her maternal concern thereafter.

Racine's play "Andromache" is certainly superior to that of Euripides, which is probably the only time you can say that about the French neo-classical playwright.
Andromache, the widow of Hector, is the slave of Neoptolemus, the son of Achilles, who is married to Hermione, the daughter of Menelaus and Helen.
Andromache has born Neoptolemus a son, and the barren Hermione accuses the Trojan woman of having used witchcraft and seeks her death.

 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 95.08.02
Thus Andromache starts as a suppliant, whose rescue could be affected by the return of Neoptolemus; after the failure of her plot, Hermione's despair is caused by the thought of his response to her actions; the last part of the play shows Peleus' reaction to Neoptolemus' eventual arrival home.
In conclusion, L.'s edition of the Andromache is a book which would well suit use among advanced secondary school students and some undergraduates, particularly those whose grasp of the language is weaker, as the translation is close enough to the Greek to be a useful aid to comprehension.
1205-7 where L. does not exploit the parallel between Peleus's position as shown here, bereft of his grandson, and the picture painted by Achilles in Iliad 24 of Peleus bereft of his son, a picture evoked for Achilles by Priam, who is in front of him -- Priam, father of Andromache's first husband.

 CliffsNotes::Andromache:Book Summary and Study Guide
In the Comédie-Française version of Andromache, Hermione is portrayed as scarcely out of her teens, in contrast to the older Andromache, and the play's characterizations justify this interpretation.
She responds to Andromache's appeal with a dry retort: "I understand your grief." She refuses her help with a transparent excuse and concludes with a taunt.
Andromache and Hermione's confrontation is the meeting of two different worlds.

Andromache - Review - alright but not the best
The play ends in tragedy for the marginal characters but Andromache escapes protecting her son Astyanax.
Andromache wants to protect the memory of her dead husband Hector and thus fends off the advances of the king Pyrrhus.
It is usual for works of literature to be based around some sort of love triangle where A loves B, B loves C and C loves A. But most originally here we have a linear development.

Andromache, written in the early years of the Peloponnesian War, shows the effects of war on the conquerors and the conquered.
The other main theme is the role and nature of women, explored through the conflict between the contrasting figures of Andromache and Hermione.
The play has a bold and original structure, which finds room for paranoia, nymphomania, racialism, blackmail, treachery, mental breakdown, elopement and revenge.

The theme of self-control is repeated throughout the Andromache.

The play takes place on the beach, where Hekabe, Cassandra, Andromache and Helen wait to discover their fate at the hands of the victorious Greeks, their faces and clothes smeared with the ashes and dust of the destroyed city.
Her daughter Cassandra was raped and her daughter-in-law Andromache saw her husband Hector die and their baby son flung from the walls of Troy before she was sent to Greece as a sex slave.
But one of the great virtues of David Stuttard's clear-eyed version of Euripides's play, written in 415BC when Athens was involved in a drawn-out war that would end in disaster in Sicily, is the way he suggests that women too play their part in fuelling the vicious circle of hate and atrocity.

Troy Movie Review - Troy Movie Trailer - The Boston Globe
"Troy" has been shot in greasy, lemon-yellow tones that don't disguise the unconvincing CGI effects, and only Bana -- and to a lesser extent Saffron Burrows as his wife, Andromache -- break through the waxy buildup to become figures both life-size and larger than life.
Bloom is young enough to believably play naive infatuation and clever enough to turn Paris into an idealistic son of privilege whose knees turn to jello when the going gets tough.
"Troy" keeps harping on the Glory That Lasts for Centuries, as if to nudge us in the ribs to point out that, yes, we do remember the names of Hector and Achilles and Agamemnon and Andromache three millenia later.

Wars always hurt the women and children most-- Andromache's son almost steals the movie, by the way-- and while the weaponry and locales may change, war in 2005 is not that much different than it ever was, a sad, sobering thought.
Queen Hecuba (Katharine Hepburn), her now crazed daughter Cassandra (Genevieve Bujold), her daughter-in-law Andromache (Vanessa Redgrave) and a host of other Trojan women are now at the mercy of the Greek victors.
The play builds as one catastrophe after another befalls these women.

In his early plays on the Trojan theme he insists that Helen was the villain of the Trojan war.

In fact, the only pity and decency presented among the Greeks is found in the Greek messenger Talthybius, who cleans the body of Astyanax and brings it to his grandmother Hecuba after Andromache's pleading to bury him is denied as she is taken away to her fate as a Greek slave.
In one of the most moving scenes in all of literature, his grandson Astyanax, a young child and the only surviving heir to the Trojan throne, is taken from his mother Andromache's grieving embrace and thrown to his death from the highest wall of the city.
In this play the Greeks do more than enslave women: they have already slain a young girl as a sacrifice to the ghost of Achilles and they take Astyanax, the son of Hector, out of the arms of his mother so that he can be thrown from the walls of Troy.

Through careful analysis the Andromache emerges as a play that poses fundamental questions, especially about the polarity of Greek and barbarian, and the morality of the gods.
The Andromache has long been disparaged despite being a brilliant piece of theatre.
Dr Allan shows how the play also challenges revenge as a motive for action, and explores the role of women as wives, mothers, and victims of war, be they Greek or Trojan, victorious or defeated.

Through Hippolytos and Andromache, a deity's hostility towards a mortal is explored; through Hecabe, the possibility that random tyche governs human affairs is shown to be wrong, and the world proves to be ordered and governed by the gods, even if human happiness must be cast aside.

The basic schema structuring Suppliants, Persai and Septem is acknowledged as shaped by the ritual matrix independently reconstructed in chapter II.

The performance of the New York Philharmonic (in the Adagio, as well as in the Second Essay for Orchestra, the Overture to the School for Scandal, Andromache's Farewell, and Medea's Dance of Vengeance) is aglow with inspiration, and the sound is exceptionally vivid, with a palpable sense of presence and space.

The most beautiful recording ever made of the Adagio for Strings is at last on CD, thoughtfully coupled with some of the other recordings the young Thomas Schippers made for Columbia Masterworks--of the music of Barber and others--between 1960 and 1965, at the start of his all-too-brief career.
