Although efforts to restore the Androscoggin River have led to improved water quality, there still remain a number of environmental toxins at levels that surpass the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines and that may be causing genotoxic damage in aquatic life.
The purpose of this study is to determine the extent of genetic damage being experienced by a sentinel animal species, Micropterus dolomieu, sampled from specific locations along the Androscoggin River and to explore the correlations that may exist between ambient toxin levels and the degree of genetic damage seen in these fish.

"This is a big-time victory for the Androscoggin River and the people of the Androscoggin valley," said Steve Hinchman, a lawyer with the Conservation Law Foundation.

Since 1987, MLT has been interested in purchasing the property because of its potential as the best public access site to the Androscoggin River, and its proximity to the Rips, which are the only white water along the entire Androscoggin Canoe Trail.
