TADEUSZ ANDRZEJ BONAWENTURA KOSCIUSZKO (1746-1817), Polish soldier and statesman, the son of Ludwik Kosciuszko, sword-bearer of the palatinate of Brzesc, and Tekla Ratomska, was born in the village of Mereczowszczyno.
After being educated at home he entered the corps of cadets at Warsaw, where his unusual ability and energy attracted the notice of Prince Adam Casimir Czartoryski, by whose influence in 1769 he was sent abroad at the expense of the state to complete his military education.
On the 17th of that month the 2000 Polish troops in Warsaw expelled the Russian garrison after days of street fighting, chiefly through the ability of General Mokronowski, and a provisional government was formed.

Mokronowski had just returned from abroad, where he had been in touch with British and German Freemasons.
In 1744, Mokronowski, who is considered to be the founder of Freemasonry in Poland, opened a lodge "Trzech Braci" (“Three Brethren”) in Warsaw, the capital of Poland.
Mokronowski, Ignacy Potocki and others succeeded in establishing the new Polish mother lodge "Katarzyna pod Gwiazda Polnocna" (“Catherine under the North Star”).

Prince Jozef Antoni Poniatowski, the nephew of the last king of Poland Stanislaw August Poniatowski, was born and raised in Vienna.
On May 6, 1792 Poniatowski became commander of the Polish army in the Ukraine, which was about to defend the country and its newly established May 3 Constitution (of 1791, the second oldest after the United States Constitution, a modern, progressive work, written largely by the King himself) against the Russian invasion.
Also at Zielence distinguished himself Stanislaw Mokronowski, a general connected to the Poniatowski family, who after the Prince's death will raise funds for his monument, while in the meantime oppose Kosciuszko during the Insurrection (in which he will play a major military role).
