Andy Kirk's Twelve Clouds of Joy was the first Kansas City band, after Benny Moten's Kansas City Orchestra, to achieve national recognition.
Kirk's first professional job was with violinist George Morrison's band, in which he was featured on bass saxophone and tuba.
The Kirk band maintained its Kansas City base and performed at the Pla-Mor, Fairyland Park and Winwood beach, occasionally touring the west and east coasts.

Andy Kirk was never a topnotch instrumentalist, composer, arranger or personality, yet he parlayed his musical talent, organizational skills and a series of lucky breaks into an enormously successful career as a bandleader.
Although his musical legacy is not as great as that of rival bandleaders Benny Moten and Count Basie, Andy Kirk’s Clouds of Joy was one of the most popular big bands during the heyday of jazz in Kansas City and one of the first regional orchestras from the southwest to achieve national prominence.
Andrew Dewey Kirk was born in Kentucky and raised in Denver, where he played the tuba and bass saxophone with a local orchestra.

After touring and recording with Morrison, Kirk worked temporarily as a postman, then joined newly formed Terrence Holder Band in Dallas, Texas, this outfit was later known as the "Dark Clouds of Joy".
Throughout the early 1930's Andy Kirk and his Clouds of Joy steadily gained popularity, much of their work was in the mid-west, but as early as 1930 they had played dates in New York.
Kirk moved to the west coast for a while, then returned to New York to manage the Hotel Theresa.
