Zwaremetalen - Interview Andy La Rocque

ANDY: He called me and asked me straight if I'd be interested in doing some leads on their album and I said yes because I thought DEATH was a real good band, and it was a great challenge to play that style.

PROGRESSIVEWORLD.NET: REVIEWS BY LARRY "LARRYD" DAGLIERI
How I came to have this disc is very interesting; I was in the mood for something new, interesting, and something that I don't normally listen to, and this popped up on my doorway one day.
Actually, Ken Golden described this to me before I scoffed it, and it really didn't sound up my alley, except that Andy LaRocque (of King Diamond) was producing the disc, and playing some guest solo spots on it as well.
Andy LaRocque produced this disc, and King Diamond's discs are among some of the best sounding discs in metal, so it's no wonder that Evergrey sounds ever great as well.

When it came to mixing the stuff, that’s where Andy and I were really put to the test because then we realized what a totally different environment we were suddenly trying to be experts on.
Andy (LaRocque, guitar] did the solo, of course, while Mike [Wead, guitar] was on the opposite side trying to hold the rhythm with the bass and the drums in the middle.
And every time Andy finishes a solo live—I’m not saying this to complain because he’s my favorite guitar player in the world—but every time he finishes a fast guitar solo on stage, he has a tendency to hold a long feedback note until he finds a safe spot to come back into the song with.

Andy and I have had to hold back on the writing for the other albums.
So the writing, Andy and I didn't have to think about the time structures or any of that, it is no problem for the guys to play.

With his trusty sidekick Andy LaRocque by his side, King managed to put together The Puppet Master under the most unconventional of conditions.
So suddenly it was just Andy and me. We went through different options for guitar players by looking at tapes and listening to some demos of other players, but over and over it would come back to how if we could just grab Mike Wead from Mercy.
We trusted what Mikkey said and we called Andy to come down the next day, so he plugged in and we played him a piece of "Dressed In White" where he would have to play a solo later, and after a couple of times he ended up playing the solo that is on the album.

Blistering.com Review: King Diamond - The Puppet Master
King has stated numerous times that his band at the moment is comparable to his band in the late 80's that featured drum wizard Mikkey Dee and underrated guitar slinger Pete Blakk.
King proves that sentiment correct on The Puppet Master, for the unsurpassed chops of Andy LaRocque are complimented perfectly by the sensitive, doomy playing of Mike Wead (also of Mercyful Fate).
There is an extra melodic quality to LaRocque's and Wead's riffs that elevate tracks like "The Ritual," "Darkness" and "Blood To Walk" to levels unseen this decade.

It takes a listen or two to get into and the songs are quite unconventional and not very catchy save for a few passages, the music's strength lies in its aggressiveness and depth.
Andy LaRocque does a nice job with his guitar capturing some of the dark '80s styled melodies, although they're still quite a bit different than his work with King Diamond.
There really aren't any weak songs on this disc and each one because of the complexity is kinda hard to pin point, but its all technical and it all rocks.

Shermanns solos are blues/rock based and LaRocques are completely skilled theory based pieces.
Besides, his stuff tends to be more quick, intricate, and more expressive than Andy's.
