Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The group was founded by Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys, and they formed the core of the outfit until 1989, when the group split.
McCluskey would usually sing and play bass guitar, whilst electronics enthusiast Humphreys initially began as a roadie, graduating to keyboards.
Meanwhile Humphreys and McCluskey collaborated on a side-project called VCL XI (named after a valve from the diagram on the cover of Kraftwerk's Radio-Activity album), where they pursued their more bizarre electronic experiments, often working with tape collages, home-made kit-built synthesisers, and circuit-bent radios.

As McCluskey himself would be the first to admit, the same song performed by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark would struggle to make the charts at all.
Andy McCluskey is not the only former pop star who has skilfully avoided relegation to the nostalgia league by turning their hand to songwriting instead of performing.
Andy McCluskey, meanwhile, remains untroubled by allegations from old Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark fans that he's "sold out".

Andy was very gracious, and a true pleasure to talk to, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Andy again for taking the time to talk to one of his biggest fans.
Andy:  The original idea of the tour as I understood it from Paul was that that they were going to use this as a vehicle to promote their new material, Paul and Claudia’s, and they would do also some Propaganda songs, because she was in Propaganda, and some OMD songs.
Andy:  Well Paul, especially in the very early days, was never a strong vocalist, and he would admit that himself, and the way he would get away with it is that he would triple track his vocals.

In 1978, Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphries hosted an evening they considered to be a self-indulgent experiment in anti-music at a club in Liverpool, England.
McCluskey retained the name and, after a long restorative period, resurfaced in 1991 with the UK number 3 hit Sailing On The Seven Seas, and the Top 10 follow-up Pandora's Box.
McCluskey continued to release records under the OMD moniker into the 1990s, though failing to match the commercial success he enjoyed with Humphries during the mid-80s.

Humphreys and McCluskey began performing together in school, playing in the bands VCL XI, Hitlerz Underpantz, and the Id. After the Id split in 1978, McCluskey was with Dalek I Love You for a brief time.
Using their record advance, McCluskey and Humphreys built a studio, which allowed them to replace their four-track, and recorded with drummer Malcolm Holmes (formerly of the Id) and Dave Hughes (formerly of Dalek I Love You).
McCluskey continued with the band, releasing Sugar Tax in 1991; in the meantime, Humphreys formed the Listening Pool.

Moving from electronic tape experiments to highly polished synthesizer pop and beyond, Liverpudlians Andy McCluskey (bass/vocals/keyboards) and synthesist Paul Humphreys (with other fulltime members, including — very significantly — a corporeal acoustic drummer) were among the most successful practitioners of electro-pop, as first demonstrated by a delightful string of singles.
Following his retirement of the OMD name, McCluskey took an unlikely career turn as the Svengali behind Atomic Kitten, an all-Liverpool knock-off of the Spice Girls.
McCluskey and Humphreys always took care to put worthwhile tracks on the backs of their singles, and nearly all of the songs here were worthy of inclusion on albums (which, in the cases of "Almost" and "The Romance of the Telescope," happened).

 OMD: album reviews and ratings
Merging the electro-pop of Ultravox and the "robot-pop" of Kraftwerk with Bowie and Roxy Music glam, OMD produced a sparkling array of danceable synth-pop that owed as much to the craftsmanship of Lennon/McCartney songwriting as to New Romantic style and sensibility.
While the premise of a singing synthesizer duo may now be a fairly conventional concept, Andy McClusky and Paul Humphreys had very few role models when they first developed their unusual style.
While it was nice to see Paul Humphreys and Andy McClusky sharing a writing credit again, even only if it was on one song, it was still one man on his own and not a reunited OMD of old.

Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark: Paul Humphreys (vocals, keyboards, percussion, electronic percussion, programming); Andy McCluskey (vocals, keyboards, bass, electronic percussion, programming).
This 1980 debut by the duo of Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys is an important milestone in the history of synth-pop.
Prior to ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE DARK, synthesizer-based pop was either austere and/or deliberately unpleasant such as Kraftwerk or Throbbing Gristle, or novelty music the likes of M's "Pop Muzik." This eponymous set was among the first by an almost entirely synthesizer-based band to focus on the creation of catchy, melodic pop songs.
