Andy Rourke joined The Smiths on December 1982, and with him the line-up was finally complete.
Though he was the last member to be admitted to the band, he could certainly provide the rhythm section The Smiths were in such a need for, so it wouldn't be long until his importance in the group was duly recognized.

Interview - David Cavanagh, Select, April 1993
You will find a lobby that holds that Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce, "the bass guitarist" and "the drummer" respectively, were two amiable but fortuitous passengers caught up in the thrill and the madness (though not the money) as The Smiths broke and raged.
There is another, more generous view of Rourke and Joyce, which contends that they were dead right for the job, that their contributions - especially those of the habitually unsung Rourke - were incontrovertibly top drawer and that anyone who thinks they were simply along for the ride is quite frankly talking via their anus.
Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce were seldom interviewed while The Smiths were together.

Relations between Joyce and Rourke cooled significantly as a result of Morrissey's statement which revealed that Joyce had misled the Courts by not declaring that, amongst others, Rourke was entitled to assets seized by his lawyers from Morrissey.
Rourke, it stated, had been deprived of royalty payments from Morrissey as they had already been covertly seized by Joyce who was obligated to declare that others (Rourke, Lillywhite, and Street) had an interest in funds he wished to seize.
