In 1951, he broke Barney Ewell 's world record of 20.7, running 20.6 - in a220 y race, which is slightly over 200 m.
As the worldrecord holder, he was not a surprise winner of the gold medal at the 1952 Summer Olympics, equalling the Olympic Record in the final.

Slade was a high school teammate of 1952 Olympic 200M champion Andy Stanfield and it was he, not Andy who was considered the star of the team.
This was, by the way, the first meet in which Andy competed as a sprinter---he had been a 440 runner up to then--and he finished only 3rd in the 100, while winning the 220.
Andy was also a competent pole vaulter, a relic of his gymnastic days in Washington, DC, before moving to Jersey City.

Forced to concentrate on the 200 meters because of chronic leg problems in the shorter sprints, Andy Stanfield became one of the best furlong sprinters of all time, competing in two Olympic Games, winning two gold medals and a silver.
Also an excellent long jumper and low hurdler at Seton Hall University, Stanfield won the AAU 220 title in 1949 but didn't appear on the Olympic scene until 1952 when he won the 200 and ran on the winning 4 x 100 relay at Helsinki.
Stanfield three times tied the world 200 record of 20.6 and also ran on the U.S. team that set a world record in the 4 x 220 relay in 1956.

He finished his career as a Crusader by coming in second to Andy Stanfield in the ICAA Championships, (Stanfield went on to win the Olympic gold medal in the 200 meters).
Andy Kelly attended Holy Cross from 1914-1917 and was a member of the track and field teams, serving as captain during the 1916-1917 season.
Unfortunately for Andy and the rest of the world, the 1916 Berlin Olympics were cancelled due to World War I. If it wasn't for the war, he would have been considered as a serious contender for medals in both the 100 and 220-yard dashes.

A product of New York City's "Hell's Kitchen", Joe Yancey has a coaching career that spanned a half century and, as co-founder of the New York Pioneer Club, tutored many of the sport's great athletes, including Olympic sprint champion Andy Stanfield, also a Hall of Fame member.
