Anecdote - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An anecdote thus is closer to the tradition of the parable than the patently invented fable with its animal characters and generic human figures— but it is distinct from the parable in the historical specificity which it claims.
An anecdote is not a metaphor nor does it bear a moral, a necessity in both parable and fable, merely an illustrative incident that is in some way an epitome.
Anecdotal evidence is an informal account of evidence in the form of an anecdote, or hearsay.

The nature of the anecdote probably changed to reflect the times and the audiences to which it was directed.
This was not a penalty for wrong-doing, but the political outcome of an appeal to the citizenry by the aristocrats, somewhat similar to our modern election campaigns when one party comes into power, but the losing party constitutes an opposition and is not physically exiled.

Anecdotal evidence is a bit risky in arguments: you run the risk of not having sufficient evidence if you defend your point on the basis of anecdotes alone, or if those you use aren't representative enough.
Scientists rightly reject the use of anecdotal evidence in deriving theory, largely due to its lack of logical rigor or consistency, but also because the "facts" and events which comprise anecdotal accounts are dubious, fleeting, and often preclude replication.
Anecdotal evidence must be both true and representative for its use to be acceptable in establishing theory.

 On "Anecdote of the Jar"
If we are willing to consider "Anecdote of a Jar" as a readymade, then Roy Harvey Pearce may well have discovered the particular mass-produced object Stevens had in mind when he wrote the poem [see photo of "Dominion" canning jar].
In my reading of "Anecdote of the Jar" Lentricchia's brand of incoherence, which arises from the absence of a political context, is of less importance than the incoherence that arises from the poem's epistemological and aesthetic ideologies.
He finds that "this is an anecdote that does not, apparently, centrally involve the human actor who places the jar" (7), and, in truth, the poem's first line--"I placed a jar in Tennessee"--has never been sufficiently emphasized.

 On "Anecdote of the Jar"
The poem is, of course, an ironic critique of the Romantic yearning for the creative interfusion of consciousness and nature as the basis of art.
Similarly the poem cheats the reader’s desire for narrative lift-off; this is an anecdote which leads nowhere, which fends off chatty familiarity, and in which there is no significant joining that transcends its constitutive elements.
Indeed, in ‘Anecdote of the Jar’ the Tennessee wilderness is less satisfactorily assimilated by the power of the colonising consciousness: the jar may take ‘dominion’, but the wilderness is not internalised as an active source of creative power; it does not give its energy and fecundity to the jar.

An anecdote is a short narrative, a story of personal experience.
In our program, in levels one through four, a pure anecdote without any interpretation of the experience is usually OK, but in levels five and six, the anecdote must have a conclusion, often more than one paragraph, which interprets the experience.
In short, the anecdote is "bottom up:" it begins with particular experience and works towards a general conclusion.

Such deliberations about whether an anecdote is representative or unrepresentative parallel the Supreme Court’s when it decides whether the factual and legal circumstances of a particular case make it a suitable "test case" for a significant legal issue.
The "anecdote" in this example consists of the "twenty noses." Whether it is "representative," suitable as a "test case" for one’s purposes, is a matter for deliberation.
A particularly clear example is the anecdote from photography, cited earlier, that Burke introduces in "Terministic Screens." The "color filters" yielding different photographs provide the anecdotal model for the terminology of selection, reflection, and deflection evolved in conformity with it.

An anecdote differs from a short story in that it is unified in time and space, is uncomplicated, and deals with a single episode.
Sometimes an anecdote is inserted into a novel as an interval in the main plot, as in Laurence Sterne’s Tristram Shandy.
