Topic: Aner

Can Greek 'Aner' Sometimes Mean 'Person'?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
In entry 9.1, with respect to aner, Louw-Nida quote Romans 4:8 as meaning, “happy is the person to whom the Lord does not reckon sin.” They then say, “The parallelism in this quotation from Ps 32:1-2 indicates clearly that the reference of aner is not a particular male but any person.” They then quote Matt.
But until substantial evidence in that regard is found, we cannot agree with the procedure of systematically changing many NT examples of aner to “person” or “persons.” What seems to be driving the decision at this point is not the preponderance of evidence but an attempt to eliminate male-oriented meanings.
Conclusion: aner means “man” (or “husband”) and should be translated that way in the New Testament.

She tells them it was a "silk dress and a promise of marriage from a rich man." But the real reason was the label she received from society.
Aner became labeled as someone who was cheap and easy, and it became harder and harder for her to find a decent man, someone who was actually interested in her.
But Aner had to live and had no other resources and no other way to survive besides living off of different men.

Confusion of Semantics with Linguistic Pragmatics in the Defense of the TNIV
Almost always the context indicates why aner is used instead of the less colorful anthropos, and the lexicons differ greatly in their short lists of the places where the "adult male" sense seems to be unimportant in the context.
His assertion that "Luke's use of aner in translating introductory addresses to crowds of mixed gender in Acts reflects a similar idiolect" is implausible because the use of aner to address an assembly is a normal feature of Greek oratory.
In the first is aner and in the second is anthropos, both in the plural: 'Praise no people before they speak, as it is in this way that people are tested.'" Like Wallace, she does not mention what edition of the LXX she is using, and she does not mention a variant reading.

Compare to "human, person" (0444 anthropos), the basic meaning of which is, "a human of either gender." In some passages aner is very close in meaning to anthropos.
And Lk.6.48: "...he is like a man (anthropos) building a house, who dug and deepened and laid a foundation on the rock..." Matthew evidently reported this man with respect to his being male, and Luke from the viewpoint of his humanity.
The word "man" is used gratuitously in many FCM (NT) translations when neither "aner" nor "anthropos" are in the Greek text.

On the one hand, Matthew 14:21 notes explicitly that 5,000 'men [aner], besides women and children' were fed. However, Acts 4:4 places no such qualifier ('besides women and children') on aner to indicate an exclusively masculine reference.
Ephesians 4:13 uses a form of aner as an idiomatic reference to the spiritual maturity of both male and female believers.
In Jonah 3:5 aner translates the Hebrew word enosh —a term commonly used of human beings in general, as is the case here.

Aner occurs in James 3:2 and is used interchangeably with anthropos in the context.

 TNIV removes man 550 times
There are six words in the Greek text translated ‘man’; oudeis, teleios, arren (or arsen), tis, anthropos, and aner.
"aner is never used of the female sex; it stands in distinction from a woman,"
Verse 17 reads, "And from Miletus he [Paul] sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of the church" The TNIV distorts aner to the neuter ‘some’ implying women were among the elders of the church.

a'-ner ('aner; Septuagint Aunan; Samaritan Pentateuch, 'anram, "sprout," "waterfall"): One of the three "confederates" of Abraham in his pursuit after the four kings (Genesis 14:13-14).
Judging from the meanings of the two other names, Mamre being the name of the sacred grove or tree (Jahwist) and synonymous with Hebron (Priestly Code); and Eschol--a name of a valley (lit.
"grape cluster") from which the personal names are derived--it may be expected to explain the name Aner in a similar way.

I'm in my first semester of Ancient Greek, and "aner" is defined in my book and by my Professor as "man" or "husband" (I don't think Greek has seperate words for man vs. husband or woman vs. wife).
I see what you are saying though, you would think that Christ is the head of literally every person.
Perhaps "aner" is used to show the specific origin and of Christ, man, and woman, which he uses to make his arguments throughout 1 Corinthians 11.
