Barometer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The mercury barometer's design gives rise to the expression of atmospheric pressure in inches or millibars: the pressure is quoted as the level of the mercury's height in the vertical column.
A simple aneroid barometer can be made using a latex membrane from a glove or balloon stretched over the mouth of a bottle and held in place with a rubber band.
Aneroid barometers have a mechanical adjustment for altitude that allows the equivalent sea level pressure to be read directly and without further adjustment if the instrument is not moved to a different altitude.

Aneroid Barometer - Background, History, Raw Materials, Design, The Manufacturing, Quality Control, Byproducts/Waste
The aneroid barometer is sensitive to temperature variations both because the capsule and its linkages will expand or contract as the temperature changes and also because the capsule's elastic properties (how much the capsule will deflect under changes in outside pressure) also change with temperature.
By arranging for the aneroid capsule to push or pull on a point near the pivot of a see-saw-like lever, the movement of the capsule is greatly magnified at the far end of the lever.
All aneroid barometers come with a zeroing screw to adjust the initial position of the sweep indicator to be the same barometric pressure as that of a very precise standard barometer kept at the factory.

The third part transfers movement of the chamber and is a linking mechanism, #3 - #9, to the fourth part, a pointer on the face of the aneroid barometer or to a pen to record on a moving graph the atmospheric pressure.
The aneroid barometer operates on the same principle as the mercury barometer - balancing the weight of the atmosphere, - but differs in that instead of balancing against a column of mercury, it balances against the combined forces of the spring and the residual air within the chamber.
Using the aneroid barometer provided, measure and record the atmospheric pressure (with the barometer sitting on the floor) at the first and fifteenth floors.

Barometer World & Museum - Home
With aneroid barometers once set there should be no need to correct for altitude as you should then always be reading your barometer as if it was at sea level.
If you have a fortin barometer, which is a metal tube with a glass reservoir at the base and scale at the top it will be designed to adjust the level of the mercury in the lower reservoir to the fuducial point which is a small ivory point.
Aneroid barometers generally are similar in accuracy to mercury barometers, both do have some small errors even if made well.

 Aneroid Barometer Sensor/Instrument Document
An aneroid ("using no liquid") barometer is an instrument that measures atmospheric pressure and operates by the effect of atmospheric pressure on a diaphragm that forms one wall of an evacuated chamber.
The NCAR aneroid barometer is an integrated self-contained device whose sensing elements, conditioning electronics, and micro-processors control parameter sampling, scaling, and communication with the master remote station computer.
The barometer consists of an aneroid transducer connected to a pressure plate and is mounted at a height of 2 meters.

Precision aneroid barometers are used for measuring the absolute atmospheric pressure.
Because of the excellent instrument properties an aneroid barometer is indispensable particularly for meteorology, ocean shipping, industry and research.

The Aneroid Barometer   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
The principle by which the aneroid barometer functions is the balancing of atmospheric pressure by the elasticity of metal.
Aneroid barometers have the advantage of being relatively easy to read, and require no corrections for change in temperature or latitude.
It is therefore necessary to compare its readings with a standard barometer at fairly frequent intervals (at least once every three months is recommended), to ensure that changes in the elasticity of the metal have not altered its readings.

Australian Exploration and the Introduction of the Aneroid Barometer
Instead of relying on a column of mercury to balance atmospheric pressure the aneroid barometer uses the expansion or contraction of a sealed metal bellows.
Clarke compared the four aneroids with three mountain barometers, ‘sufficiently often, and under a range of nearly an inch of pressure during the period of the experiments’ that he felt the aneroids indicated the changes of the atmosphere ‘with as much precision’ as the mountain barometers.
In 1852, Flavelle Brothers offered the ‘new aneroid barometers, with metallic plates and attached thermometers’.(25) These were among a large assortment of instruments directed to ‘Gentlemen engaged in, or having a taste for, scientific pursuits’.

A barometer's main use, however, is not to measure altitude, but to measure the actual changes in the pressure of air at a particular place.
The aneroid barometer is operated by a metal cell containing only a very small amount of air, or a series of such cells joined together.
Your barometer will most likely be marked in tens of hectopascals (990, 1000, 1010 etc.) with further graduations given for each hectopascal, which enable it to be read reasonably easily to the nearest half hectopascal.

 Aneroid Barometer (glossary definition)
Aneroid barometer An instrument for measuring atmospheric pressure.
It is constructed on the following principles: an aneroid capsule (Vidie capsule, which is a thin, disk-shaped box or capsule, usually metallic) is partially evacuated of gas, and is restrained from collapsing by an external or internal spring.
Magnification of the spring deflection is obtained both by connecting capsules in series and by mechanical linkages.
