		Ang Lee and constant collaborator James Schamus have concocted a psychobabble-drenched tale where the Hulk (or, sorry, Hulk) is merely an outward manifestation of Bruce Banner’s memories of childhood trauma; if the X-Men are really teenagers in disguise, dealing with their changing bodies and social ostracism, then the Hulk is, literally, a big baby.
		His own father, Koro (Rawiri Paratene), focuses his rage on the surviving child, blaming her for the death of her brother.

		"The Hulk, directed by acclaimed art-house filmmaker Ang Lee, is altogether different, being the first mainstream comic-book adaptation to attempt to enhance the original material's themes and ideas and to create a character-centered story all while delivering epic, colorful action.
		Le Ténia, we later learn (and see, about half-way through the film, in a horrific 9-minute sequence), raped Cassel's girlfriend a few hours earlier.
		Rawiri Paratene is similarily excellent as the stubborn, determined, but wounded Koro, and brings the contradictory nature of the man to life beautifully.

		The latter (Cliff Curtis) was and is too grief-stricken to stay in the community – his wife died giving birth to Pai, and tribal chief Koro still pressures him to deliver a male grandchild who might one day "lead our people out of the darkness" that modern, Westernized life has imposed.

	CelArt for the Masses
		Ang Lee's controversial, angst-ridden adaptation of the popular Marvel comic, HULK, premiered Oct. 28, 2003 on DVD (Universal Home Entertainment, $26.98).
		The complex, tragic story aside (the scientific sins of the father are truly visited on the son), there's the more intriguing issue of Industrial Light and Magic's CG work on the Hulk to reconsider.
		Finally, there's "The Incredible Ang Lee" that pays tribute to the director's hands-on approach, including his donning the motion capture suit to create the Hulk's performance.

		Her mother and twin brother died during her birth, leaving her father Porourangi (Cliff Curtis) bereft and her grandfather Koro (Rawiri Paratene) pining for a grandson to become the rightful leader of their tribe.
		The tensions in Pai and Koro's relationship form the film's dramatic core and her efforts to prove herself worthy of his love are wholly involving.
		Despite early indications that the big green guy would look as silly as Scooby-Doo, the titular star of Ang Lee's anguished adaptation of the Marvel comic is passably believable, largely due to the canny use of long and medium-length shots that situate him in his environments in a realistic manner.
