Topic: Angaraks

In the News (Wed 15 Feb 12)

  Timeline / The Second Age
They have slaughtered the Angaraks nearly to the point of extinction, their objective being to push Torak to the point where He will attempt to use the Orb in a way that it will not tolerate.
Currently, one faction follows the generals, with a settlement at Mal Zeth; a second faction follows Urvon's Grolims and has a setlement at Mal Yaska; and a third is with Torak at Cthol Mishrak.
The Angaraks have also invaded and subjugated Karanda, and begun the conversion of the Karands to the worship of Torak.

In the center of this sea of Angaraks was borne the huge iron pavilion of one called Kal Torak, which means King and God.
Early in the summer, the Angaraks deployed for the assault upon the city.
The Angaraks began to fall like mown wheat and were overcome by confusion.

Angaraks, on the other hand, would have problems with it since all of their religious texts make it clear that the *only* being that any Angarak should feel love for is Torak himself.
Oh, not that it wasn't a poorly kept secret that everyone was aware of anyway, still, Angarak sensibilities must be bowed down to in the Imperial City and as such, their relationship would never be publicly acknowledged as more than 'good friends'.
Angaraks did *not* condone same-sex relationships and so to the world at large they were merely 'good friends', but behind closed doors they were so very much more.

While the Angaraks bent most of their efforts to the establishment of the Dalasian Protectorates, there was a wary, tentative peace.
The sons of high-ranking Melcene bureaucrats were sent to Mal Zeth to live with the families of Angarak generals, and the generals' sons were sent to the imperial capital to be raised.
They pragmatically accepted the forms of Angarak worship out of political expediency, but the Grolims were unable to command the abject submission to the Dragon God which had always characterized the Angaraks.

Belsambar, an Angarak, followed and at the last came Beldin, a hunchbacked dwarf with no sense of hygiene but an incredible mind.
All the peoples moved with their Gods to their present locations, with the exception of the Angaraks, who nestled themselves around Cthol Mishrak, and the Alorns, who ranged across the north searching for a way to Mallorea to retrieve the Orb.
When the Angaraks were nearly upon them Belgarath instructed Riva to raise the Orb over his head, and upon sighting its enemy the Orb flared up with a ferocity that nearly matched the one that destroyed Torak's face and Torak was turned back, and so the men escaped.

Belgarion's World for Risus: Character Creation
If a character is better at something than the racial Cliché might indicate, it can be broken out as a sort of "bonus dice Cliché." The total dice provided by both the racial and separate Clichés may not exceed four for a starting character, or six at any time.
Angaraks get this for free as part of their racial Cliché until that time.
However, if the subject has some Angarak gold already, he won't want to part with it, and he'll want more.

The flsmith searched throughout the house desperately, shouting for the child, quite forgetting that the Angarak girl surely could not decipher what he was shouting and quite likely shrank back in fear at the sound of a foreign tongue but he pushed on forward, relentlessly.
After the fighting drew to a close, and the Angaraks have been driven off, his superiors gave him a small purse of gold coins and several medals to recognition of his valour in battle but these objects lie buried deep in his personal sea-chest untouched.
Let others boast about their exploits and bravery, deep in his heart, Joram will always remember how he felt as he brought the tiny body of the Thullish child out from the burning wreckage that was her home and let out a grief-stricken cry as the city of Thull Mardu died before him.

In a cave on the way, (which incidently is the cave in which the Gods stayed while creating the world and everything in it), Garion brings a dead colt (which he had helped birth minutes before) back to life.
Torak, in his final--and most ultimately human--act, cries out, "Mother!" as he dies, referring the Earth herself as he believed that she was the only one to ever truly love him for who he was.

Chief among these concerns is the depiction of the Angaraks an "almond-eyed, untrustworthy, and strange people" who are the main antagonists of the series and embody many of the stereotypes that were used for people of Asian descent.
It should be noted, however, that when it came to actually depicting the Angaraks (as opposed to the descriptions of them by other, admittedly biased, members of the cast) they showed a greater diversity and certainly didn't fulfill the promises of their being untrustworthy.
It is certainly true that many of the races seem to have an underlying theme to them, but as in the real world, it is hardly their only defining characteristic.

Therefore, when the land was divided, the Angaraks found themselves on one side of the new sea called the Sea of the East, while the people of the other Gods found themselves on the other.
The "good guys", meaning the ones who are not Angaraks, were on the Western side, and the Angaraks were on the Eastern side.
That's how Torak eventually was forced to use the Orb to split the continent, and this event is often referred to as "the cracking of the world", and the Alorn calendar counts its years from that day.

The Malloreans are a diverse sect of the Angarak peoples worshipping Torak.
Though the Mallorean Grolims are known to be some of the most fanatically loyal to Torak, the common worshipper often tends to pay lip service to the worship of the Dragon God.
Though the Malloreans tend to lack the physical bulk of their Angarak cousins the Murgos and Thulls, they tend to be a bit more intelligent thus creating a powerful Grolim base.

When Riva raised the Orb to destroy the Angaraks, and thus drove even Torak away, Dras looked at his younger brother with new respect.
The matter about writing ravings of mad-people struck Dras as odd and weird, but he knew that it was from Aldur and not Belgarath, so he took it seriously.

In fact, it is effectively two battles going on at once, with half the Western allies army on each bank of a river fighting a separate army of Angaraks (generic name for baddies), who, it turns out would rather fight each other but the goodies happen to be in the way.
A third Angarak nation (Nadraks) actually came to the rescue of the West on the North bank and attacked the Malloreans so allowing the army to escape, but that complicates things too much.
The only non-HOTT like thing about the battle is that the western sorcerors didn't do any offensive magic of their own but instead concentrated on nullifying the enemy, which can't really happen in HOTT unless you treat them as Clerics - which doesn't feel right, or make up some house rules.

The Angaraks worship the God Torak, who is not a particularly pleasant God, favouring such ideas as human sacrifice and his worshipper's right to global domination.
Fortunately for the world, Torak has been in a coma for five centuries, ever since a Westerner struck him down in battle using the magical Orb of Aldur — an artefact with powers to match the Gods that was the original cause of the conflict between Torak and his fellow Gods.

Eddings, when I re-read it last year, ALSO says "swarthy" and, if I'm not mistaken, something along the lines of "slant or squint eyed" to describe the Murgos, and the other Angaraks.
The majority of writers appear to be caucasian, thus write from their cultural perspective.
