In the bottom of the 9th inning, umpire Don Denkinger called Royals batter Jorge Orta safe at first base — a call refuted by broadcast television's instant replay.
The blow was reminiscent of Dave Henderson's clutch homer against the Angels in Game 5 of the 1986 ALCS.
Houston was then shut down in the bottom of the 9th by the Cardinals' closer Jason Isringhausen to preserve the win, guaranteeing at least one more game at Busch Stadium.

BBTF's Baseball Primer Newsblog Discussion :: Washington Post: Umpire's Call Is Defended By MLB   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Many umpires like to use the "whiplash mechanic" (hands together then right hand back and left hand forward done to the side of the plate) to signify that the third pitch is a strike and results in an out.
And as for the comment of some unidentified umpire who wishes to retain his connections with MLB while criticizing their intent, if he won't go onto the record then there is nothing of substance he can add to the issue.
Practically speaking, the umpire has to be clear in signalling, and also in signalling when he isn't making a call, and the players have to be able to rely on the signals.

An interesting note on the Angels: They were 4th in runs scored, 6th in on base percentage, 1st in batting average, 21st in home runs and 26th in walks.
What that tells me is the Angels were very lucky in 2002 and their likelihood to maintain the same level of success is very low.
The Angels lineup is chockfull of hitters with above average batting averages and below average on base percentages: Darin Erstad (.283/.313), Garrett Anderson (.306/.332), Adam Kennedy (.312/.345).
