For the record, Angela Gheorghiu, 34, and Roberto Alagna, 37, are as closely entwined as they have been since they fell for each other at Covent Garden while Alagna was singing Gounod's Roméo et Juliette in October 1994.
Gheorghiu travels with a personal assistant called Alexander; Alagna is looked after by his sister; weeks before a premiere they are joined by a vast extended family, occupying several suites.

Gheorghiu's best-known roles are in the romantic and verismo operas of the 19th and early 20th centuries, sampled here in beautifully interpreted arias of Massenet, Charpentier, Puccini, and Cilea.
Gheorghiu's 18th-century arias give Handel and Mozart a refreshing energy, and she is captivating in "I could have danced all night." The disc is in widescreen anamorphic format with DTS, Dolby Digital 5.0, and PCM stereo sound, and EMI's booklet is a model of what all DVD releases should offer but seldom do.
Angela Gheorghiu has obviously received great training in cultivating her natural talent, and the result is phenomenal.

Gheorghiu and Alagna have lived near Geneva for 10 years, yet she is little known in Switzerland, where artistic restrictions on foreign nationals have limited her appearances.
Gheorghiu is singing it for the first time in the opera house, but the soundtrack of her film attracted adulatory reviews: "The most sensuous Tosca imaginable...", "ideal passion and beauty..." and "a great performance, as magnetic as Callas's."
Gheorghiu is giving little away, except that she loves Tosca, once memorably dismissed as "a shabby little shocker".

This recital disc shows soprano Angela Gheorghiu reaching out beyond the lyric Verdi-Gounod-Massenet-Puccini repertory in which she made her name and edging into the gymnastic world of coloratura and bel canto--with some measure of success.
Angela Gheorghiu has an amazing voice, and there are moments when she sounds amazingly like Callas, especially when she colors phrases in the middle range, and, moreover, she has a dramatic compulsion that completely eluded both Sutherland and Caballe'.
Angela Gheorghiu is a beautiful woman who happens to have a lovely, dark voice capable of many colors.

In the case of Angela Gheorghiu, both Decca and EMI have plenty of good material -- so much so that both released compilations in 2004, each of which is an excellent capsulation of Gheorghiu's art and career, and neither of which duplicates the other's musical selections.
Decca was Gheorghiu's label during the first years of her international career, and so "The Essential Angela Gheorghiu" is limited to recordings made before 2000.
It was the role that launched Gheorghiu into the big time, and having her "Ah, fors' è lui...sempre libera" from that time of her career is a great opportunity to hear the qualities that first made her famous.

Anybody who knows Angela Gheorghiu's work will know that she makes a brilliant heroine, her powerful voice has the ability to transport the listener right into the heart of the piece and the drama conveyed in her voice is incredible.
Bhrams' "Wiegenlied" shows that there is a marvellously tender side to Gheorghiu and her performance of Schubert's "Mille cherubini in coro" is extraordinarily beautiful as are Mendelssohn's "Auf Fluugeln des Gesanges" and Puccini's "Salve regina".
Gheorghiu's rendition of the Mascagni "Ave Maria" is simply divine and must be one of the best performances I have ever heard combining Gheorghiu's power and dramaticism with amazingly tender singing in just the right proportions.

Roberto Alagna - People Magazine 21 June 1999
The couple have been called "Bonnie and Clyde" by one exasperated director, and Gheorghiu has even been referred to in opera circles as "La Petite Draculette." In a notorious 1997 incident, she infuriated Met general manager Joseph Volpe by refusing to wear a blonde wig in Carmen.
Gheorghiu still cannot talk about her own tragedy: Her sister Elena, also a soprano, died of a heart attack at age 30 in 1996.
Unlike Alagna, Angela and Elena, daughters of a train conductor in Adjud, began training for the opera as children.

Angela Gheorghiu sings Puccini Arias @ Royal Festival Hall, London : concert review
Angela Gheorghiu's concert of Puccini arias at the Royal Festival Hall was one such example, designed to plug her recent Puccini album, which has been generally though not universally well received.
This was a bit frustrating, as Gheorghiu tended to select numbers which she has been singing for some time rather than the more interesting items.
Yet it was Gheorghiu's evening, and the well-deserved standing ovation at the end acknowledged her high status as one of the world's leading opera singers.

After just one rehearsal, soprano Angela Gheorghiu has pulled out of the Teatro Real Madrid's new production of La Traviata, saying she disapproves of director Pier Luigi Pizzi's "vulgar" interpretation of the opera, Spain's ABC news service reports.
The famously temperamental Gheorghiu said that Pizzi's staging violates the spirit of both Verdi's opera and the Alexander Dumas play on which it is based.
Emilio Sagi, the opera company's artistic director, said that Gheorghiu arrived in Madrid 15 days after the rest of the performers and that her early departure is an insult to the cast and to conductor Jesús López-Cobos.
