While the characters, as written, could by no stretch of the imagination be called real at least their performances allow you to suspend disbelief and enjoy the craft and with what these two superb comediennes bring to the characters and make them wickedly funny and very enjoyable.
The director, Robin Herford, appears to have found the play as humourless as I did and overcompensated by making his characters rush about the stage in an attempt to convince the audience that what they were doing was funny.
I feel though, as I have already indicated, that this was due to the performances of Angela Thorne and Brigit Forsyth who were, notwithstanding everything else, a sheer delight and worth spending an evening with.

BBC - Norfolk - Entertainment - Arsenic And Old Lace review
I speak of course of Angela Thorne (brought into millions of living rooms via the TV comedy series To the Manor Born) and Brigit Forsyth (known to anyone over 50 as the long suffering wife of Likely Lad Rodney Bewes).
They are a triumph - Angela Thorne giving off the veneer of some ditsy old dear, but clearly in possession of a streak of cold, hard steel and aided and abetted in her misguided, charitable poisoning by her sister Martha, played with the same tough determination by Brigit Forsyth.
The play of course is old as the hills - turned into a movie starring Cary Grant way back in 1942 - and might benefit from some judicious pruning, being just a little too long post interval.

He rejoices in his quiet Christian way at being able at long last to say goodbye to Audrey fforbes-Hamilton - until he finds to his horror that she has only moved down the drive to the Estate's gate-house.
And also deliciously delineated is the character of Audrey's bullied, submissive friend Marjory, played by Angela Thorne, who has to listen to every nasty thing Audrey has to say about Richard De Vere - but who really fancies him all the time.
Of course, while Audrey loathes and despises Richard De Vere, as she sets about her self-appointed task of teaching him his new duties as Lord of the Manor, you can catch in each episode the faint blush of romance, for we all know how this particular battle is going to end.
