The highway was originally envisioned in 1912 as "the most scenic and picturesque mountain road in the state", but the need for a road for fire-fighting was at least equally important.
It won't surprise anyone who has driven on the highway that motorcyclists were involved in 47% of the accidents in 1995-1998, despite being less than 3% of all registered vehicles.

Angeles Forest Highway is not a road of Angeles Crest Highway's caliber but is a very good stretch of pavement in it's own right.

At the request of the Angeles National Forest, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will lock the gate at Cedar Springs (near milepost 62 on SR 2), east of the turn-off to Buckhorn Campground and west of the tunnels.
The Angeles Crest Highway, which is administered by Caltrans, has been closed to through traffic (connecting Wrightwood) since the fall of 2004, due to storm damage.
By assisting the Forest Service with restricting use of the highway, an additional mile and a half of the road will be added to the normal seasonal closure.

The Angeles Crest Highway is the main highway that runs through the Angeles National Forest north of Los Angeles.
It is a two-lane highway that runs east-west for 66 miles and reaches a maximum elevation of 7,903 feet at the Dawson Saddle Trailhead.
Although the sign shows the elevation to be 7,901 feet, it is the trail head a quarter-mile to the east that outdoes it by two feet.

As I was starting this part of the ride, going away from the 210 freeway and toward the base of the mountains, it felt like this would be the steepest part of the ride, despite the road being straight and not winding.
Highway 39 is visible on the ridge to the left.

The Angeles Crest Highway is still closed from Islip Saddle to Cedar Springs, evidently due to the protection of the Mountain Yellow Frog.
From Wrightwood to Highway thirty nine we took highway 2, as there was too much snow on the trail and that was ok. Strongly suggest taking highway if there is snow, there is a tunnel that is deserted and really fun to walk through, as well as an amazing viewpoint.
Though there are snowbanks as high as 10 feet on the highway and a lot of debris, this stretch of the road is easy to walk.

After we regrouped, the next "section" was an 18 mile stretch comprised of 9 miles along the Angeles Forest Highway, a turn onto Upper Big Tujunga and 9 more miles back to Angeles Crest Highway.

This is my favorite part of Angeles Crest Highway as we climb to a height of almost 8,000 feet.

As you enter ACH (Angeles Crest Highway) about 10 miles in is a spur road off to Mount Wilson which rises to about 5,000 feet.
Angeles Crest Highway starts just north of LA runs through the San Gabriel Mountains, into San Bernardino County where eventually you meet up with the 15 Freeway which you take back toward LA through the El Cajon Pass which is the high point on the road from LA to Vegas.
They close Angeles Crest Highway every year when the snows come but usually have it open again by May. It seems this year the road got "El Ninoed" and requires more work than usual to reopen.

Even Orange County's Highway 78 can't hold a candle to this masterpiece with a capitol M. The sheer scenery, sheer altitude, and lack of repitition regardless of sheer longevity exhaults this Holy Shrine of Bikedom into the Eternal Hall of Fame.
Even though Los Angeles' long awaited "Big One" - an earthquake of magnitude 9+ on the Richter Scale - will probably take this 66-mile road down along with the mountains that host it, Angeles Crest Highway will long live in the memory of every biker who has ever ridden it, or even dreamed of it.
The neat part, though, is the fact that Angeles Crest Highway travels a long way across the tops of this mountain range, and in doing so it finds some nice highland areas for straights and sweepers.
