Mantex ...: Deceived with Kindness - A Bloomsbury Childhood
Angelica Garnett is the daughter of Vanessa Bell and her lover Duncan Grant.
At the time of Angelica's birth, Vanessa was still married to Clive Bell, so Angelica was passed off to the world as his daughter, though many people in the inner circle of the Bloomsbury Group knew the truth.
Her very unequal relationship with David Garnett (she was twenty-six years younger) takes place against a backdrop of family disapproval, the onset of the second world war, and the suicide of her aunt Virginia.

Duncan and Vanessa painted in Charleston and decorated the house itself with their paintings, and Vanessa's husband Clive Bell stayed with them for long periods fairly often.
Although it is generally assumed that Duncan's sexual relations with Vanessa ended in the months before their daughter Angelica was born (Christmas, 1918), they continued to live together until Vanessa's death in 1961, with Duncan staying on at Charleston until shortly before his own death in 1978.
(Angelica grew up believing that Clive Bell was her father; she bore his surname and his behaviour toward her never indicated otherwise).

Among those interviewed on camera are Virginia's niece and nephew, Angelica Garnett and Quentin Bell; Vita Sackville-West's son Nigel Nicolson; and Bloomsbury notables including Frances Partridge and poet-novelist Stephen Spender.
With archival footage, paintings of the period, and haunting family photos of a Victorian childhood of both beauty and abuse, the film interweaves the personal story of Virginia's life and loves with the turbulent times she lived in.
