Badalamenti began his work in film music (under the name Andy Badale) in 1973 with his score for Gordon's War, but his big break came in 1986 when he was hired by David Lynch as Isabella Rossellini's vocal coach for the movie Blue Velvet.
Badalamenti was chosen the represent America as the composer and conducter of The Flaming Arrow- the "torch theme" for the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics held in Barcelona, Spain.
Badalamenti's music is most commonly described as "haunting." His forte lies with dark, dreamy melodies that evoke emotions of passion and paranoia.

Filmtracks: The Wicker Man (Angelo Badalamenti)
While Badalamenti has worked extensively with electronic soundscapes in the past that could serve him well here, the score for the new The Wicker Man is largely symphonic, with the notable exception of the "Flashback Memories" cue that uses the cliche of backwards mixes for a flashback sequence.
Otherwise, Badalamenti uses the orchestra as his central force, and almost equally surprisingly conjures several harmonic themes to represent different elements in the story.
Badalamenti introduces all his major thematic material in his "Overture for the Wicker Man," most of which is rooted in a harmonious minor key while employing the assistance of a solo female voice to represent the island's society.

Angelo Badalamenti is one of the most original musical voices in film.

Together, Badalamenti and Lynch seemed to have invented their own version of the film soundtrack, a musical purgatory where every kind of style and sound floats about in a beautiful state of dread, all trying to be heard at once-a soundscape that's nothing less than hypnotic.
But when the last school bell rang, Badalamenti was on the next subway to New York City where he tried to get deals for his original compositions.

 Filmtracks: Holy Smoke! (Angelo Badalamenti)
With almost ten minutes of subdued strings and only hints of the romance that Badalamenti is capable of in his music, it's important to withhold judgment about the music until you begin to reach some of the electronic accompaniment.
Badalamenti's varied string cues simply don't hold the enthusiasm, spiritualism, and journeying spunk of the rest of the album.
The composer states that the experience of writing the score for the film in less than three days was somewhat of a religious one between he and the director, Jane Campion (The Piano), and it really can be heard as such.

Today's working hypothesis is no composer was ever more important to the success of a television show than Angelo Badalamenti was for his work on the David Lynch televison cult hit "Twin Peaks" (1990-91).
