Angelo Siciliano, who stepped off a boat onto Ellis Island in 1903, did not appear likely to be of much help.
Angelo's unlikely transformation was sparked by two incidents: yet another humiliation by a bully -- this time, a big lug kicked sand in his face on a Coney Island beach and waltzed off with his gal - and a visit to the zoo.
Angelo, using isometric exercises, pumped himself up into the persona of Charles Atlas -- and his advertising alter ego, "Mac," the scourge of beach bullies everywhere -- in an astonishingly short time.

One night in 1903, while on his way home from the factory where he worked, a skinny 10-year-old boy named Angelo Siciliano was attacked by a local bully.
Angelo went to his room and cried himself to sleep but not before swearing an oath to God that he would never allow any man on earth to hurt him again.
Angelo's body now developed more quickly and he adopted the name "Charles Atlas." He soon got work performing feats of strength at Coney Island: bending railroad spikes, driving nails into wood with his bare hands, tearing up Manhattan telephone books, or lying on a bed of nails with three men standing on his chest.

Angelo Siciliano (1892-1972), the Italian-American immigrant who would enter fitness legend, popular culture, and even English-language dictionaries as Charles Atlas was himself a 97-pound “runt” in 1905, and like “Mac,” he got sand kicked in his face on the beach at Coney Island.
Later, in Prospect Park, he was inspired by the statues of Greek gods, who did not belong to gyms, and eschewed weight-training in favor of isometrics.
Now fashioning himself “Charles Atlas,” Siciliano teamed up with entrepreneur Charles Roman in 1928 to develop his enormously successful mail-order campaign, reaching huge numbers of boys and young men in a remarkably short time.
