The Angirasas are sons of the Flame, lustres of the Dawn, givers and drinkers of the Wine, singers of the Hymn, eternal youths and heroes who wrest for us the Sun, the Cows, the Horses and all treasures from the grasp of the sons of Darkness.
The Angirasas are heroes and fighters of that battle, gosu yodhaah, 'fighters for the cows or rays'.
The Angirasas speak aright, itthaa vadadbhih angirobhih (VI.18.5); they are masters of the Rik who place perfectly their thought, svaadhibhir rkvabhih (VI.32.2); they are the sons of heaven, heroes of the Mighty Lord who speak the truth, and think the straightness.

In the Commentaries three etymologies are given: Buddhaghosa says that "it means emitting rays of various hues from the body," and that the word is therefore applicable to all Buddhas alike (DA.iii.963).
It is, however, well-known that, according to Vedic tradition, the Gautamas belong to the Angirasa tribe (see Vedic Index: Gotama); the word, as applied to the Buddha, therefore, is probably a patronymic, in which case we have another example of a Ksatriya tribe laying claim to a brahmin gotra.
Rhys Davids suggests that the connection of the name Angirasa with the physician is due to the charms against disease to be found in the Atharva Veda.

"Angirasa" is a Pali language epithet applied now and then to the Buddha, Gautama.
It debuts in a highly intriguing scene of the Vinaya-Pitaka when the Buddha is wandering alone through the countryside, shortly after his celebrated awakening.
There, says the text, Angirasa passes the night in the yoga of psychic heat, "with flames streaming forth from his body".(12)

The Hindu : Significance of human birth
The Upanishad starts by making a distinction between matter and Spirit so that it is made clear in the beginning itself that the subject of deliberation is the Self (Atman).
Saunaka approached Angirasa with the question that confronts every spiritual seeker, "Knowing what does all become known?" The teaching follows as answer to this query in which the teacher subsumes all other subjects except spirituality as lower because each area can only give knowledge about it.
The discourse shows that a preceptor (Guru) is one who does not just answer the student's doubt but goes on to teach him with patience till he is enlightened by Self-knowledge.
