Angle of Repose - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Angle of Repose is a 1971 novel by Wallace Stegner about a wheelchair bound historian, Lyman Ward, who has lost connection with his son and living family and decides to write about his frontier era grandparents.
Lyman sees a struggle between this limitation and Susan's desire to recreate some of the "culture" of the east that she gave up upon her marriage.
The title is an engineering term for the angle at which soil finally settles after, for example, being dumped from a mine as tailings.

Reading Group Guide | ANGLE OF REPOSE by Wallace Stegner
Although the term 'angle of repose' refers to a resting point, Stegner's novel, if nothing else, helps us recognize America as a nation in constant flux, engaged in incessant struggle between east and west, between young and old, between myth and reality, between reaching for one's dreams, and settling for less.
Angle of Repose was written during a time of tremendous political and social upheaval in America, and Lyman's frequent reflections on the era create much of the tension in the novel.
Angle of Repose was written in 1971, during a period of great upheaval in America's social and political culture.

Plant establishment on angle of repose mine waste dumps by Katrina J. Leavitt, George C.J. Fernandez, and Robert S. ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Angle of repose slopes associated with mine waste dumps are difficult to revegetate due to steep slope angle, poor soil properties, and potential for extensive soil erosion.
In addition, long distance transport of seeds down stable, angle of repose slopes was not detected during the first growing season after seeding, indicating that the lack of seedlings on angle of repose slopes was not due to movement of seeds downslope.
Thus, although coversoiling increased establishment and survival of plants on angle of repose slopes, slope stabilization is necessary to ensure the success of revegetation efforts and to prevent the coversoil from eroding and moving downslope.

Calculating Bushels   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The angle of repose, or angle with a horizontal surface formed when free-flowing grain comes to rest, can be used to estimate the height or width of grain piles.
The tangent of an angle (abbreviated tan) is the ratio of the length of the side of a right triangle (triangle that contains one 90-degree angle) that is opposite the angle to the length of the side of the triangle that is adjacent to the angle.
This means that for grain dropped into a pile from an overhead spout, the tangent of the angle of repose is equal to the height of the pile divided by half the width of the pile.

Carr evaluated interparticulate cohesive properties with angle of repose measurements and studied the effects of packing geometry of solids with bulk and tap density measurements.
However, the angle of repose (39 vs 42) may be too close given the larger random variability associated with results based on this method.
Carr proposed that the angle of repose was a valid characterization of flow because it provided an indirect measurement of the shape, size, porosity, cohesion, fluidity, surface area, and bulk properties of the material.

Angle of repose (Physics), the inclination of a plane at which a body placed on the plane would remain at rest, or if in motion would roll or slide down with uniform velocity; the angle at which the various kinds of earth will stand when abandoned to themselves.

Mass Wasting - Angle of Repose Exercises   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The downhill movement of soil and loose unconsolidated sediments is due to the force of gravity and is resisted by the force of friction.
At angles steeper than the angle of repose friction is not sufficient to counter gravity and mass wasting occurs.
At angles less than the angle of repose gravity cannot overcome friction and sediments may accumulate to form steeper slopes.

major determinant for an optimal solar panel angle is the angle of repose, qr, of the dust particles that is dependent on a variety of physical and chemical properties of the particles, the panel surface, and the environmental conditions on the Mars surface.
Primary factors determining the angle of repose are the particle angularity, roughness, size, and surface charge, the humidity, temperature, and chemical composition of the Martian atmosphere, and the properties of the panel surface.
The angle of repose is defined as the “steepest angle of a surface at which a mass of loose or fragmented material will remain standing in a pile, rather than sliding or crumbling”.

In order to account for the reversal in axial segregation with rotation speed (see reversible results) the difference between the angle of repose of the mixed phase and the angle of repose of the large bead phase must decrease as the angular velocity is lowered.
Measurements of the dynamic angle of repose for homogeneous phases of large beads and for a 50-50 mixture as a function of rotation speed are shown in the graph below.
Measurements of the dynamic angle of repose for the homogeneous phase of small beads displayed a greater sensitivity to variations of humidity, therefore only the data for the large beads are included.

 Angle of Repose(Wallace Stegner)
His angle of repose is typically vertical, torso jammed upright into a wheelchair; he expects this angle to soon become horizontal, permanently.
While 'repose' suggests a condition of peaceful stasis, a slope at this angle is in fact everywhere on the verge of failure; we live in this world with others in an uneasy equilibrium which can be placidly stable to the outward eye yet disappear at a moment in an avalanche.
So in a sense Angle of Repose is a historical novel, drawn from real characters, echoing their real words.

 The role of water
The angle of repose is the steepest angle at which a pile of unconsolidated grains remains stable, and is controlled by the frictional contact between the grains.
Slightly wet unconsolidated materials exhibit a very high angle of repose because surface tension between the water and the grains tends to hold the grains in place.
When the material becomes saturated with water, the angle of repose is reduced to very small values and the material tends to flow like a fluid.

Angle of Repose, Constant Reader Discussion
ANGLE OF REPOSE is so full of good things we could talk about it for a long time.
Thus, the angle of repose is inherently a natural state of rest, and one that can only be changed through artificial means, and probably only temporarily.
In this sense, Susan's life and her difficulties, and the ultimate 'angles of repose' for all the story's conflicts are a necessary result of life at the time and place described.

Angle of Repose is a beautiful exhibit fashioned from a large circular piece of diamond-plate metal, several handfuls of fine sand, and a large circular plexiglass plate.
As the plates turn, sand which has fallen to the bottom is lifted to the top where it then trickles down through the grooves in the diamond-plate surface.
The sand pours over the grooves like waves, rippling as it follows the angle of repose to the bottom of the plate.

The narrator, by contrast, is just too stiff a personality to learn their lessen and earn the satisfaction that they achieved.
