  ANGLESITE (Lead Sulfate)
Anglesite's yellow color seen in many specimens is attractive and adds to the specimen's appeal.
Anglesite is named for its type locality of Anglesey, an island at the northern tip of the United Kingdom.
Anglesite typically forms a flattened blade that juts out from a host rock and with what appears to be a steep dome termination but is actually two faces of another rhombic prism.

Rocks & Minerals: Anglesite In Galena   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Anglesite is orthorhombic (2/m 2/m 2/m), crystallizing in a wide variety of habits, as reflected in the 460 anglesite crystals illustrated in Goldschmidt's Atlas (1913).
Anglesite is of widespread occurrence in New Mexico, with "museum specimens" being reported from the Organ district, Dona Ana County, and good crystals exceeding 1 cm in length on galena and associated with pyrolusite and hematite at the Carnahan mine, New Placers district, Santa Fe County (Northrup 1959).
In California, anglesite occurred as large masses and crystalline crusts in mines of the Cerro Gordo district, Inyo County; as crystals to 1 cm from the Blind Spring Hill area of Mono County; and in crystals at the Ibex mine south of Saratoga Springs and in ores of the Blue Bell mine, San Bernardino County.

CONK! Encyclopedia: Anglesite   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Anglesite occurs as prismatic orthorhombic crystals and earthy masses, and is isomorphous with barite and celestite.
The crystals from Anglesey, which were formerly found abundantly on a matrix of dull limonite, are small in size and simple in form, being usually bounded by four faces of a prism and four faces of a dome; they are brownish-yellow in colour owing to a stain of limonite.
At most localities it is found as isolated crystals in the lead-bearing lodes, but at some places, in Australia and Mexico, it occurs as large masses, and is then mined as an ore of lead.

ANGLESITE - LoveToKnow Article on ANGLESITE
Anglesite is a mineral of secondary origin, having been formed by the oxidation of galena in the upper parts of mineral lodes where these have been affected by weathering processes.
At Monteponi the crystals encrust cavities in glistening granular galena; and from Leadhills, in Scotland, pseudomorphs of anglesite after galena are known.
At most localities it is found as isolated crystals in the lead-bearing lodes, but at some places, in Australia and Mexico, it occurs as large masses, and is then mined as an ore of lead, of which the pure mineral contains 68 %.

Fractions of all known specimens previously labeled as anglesite were acquired, including fragments from the type specimen (Smithsonian specimen number 142547).

Anglesite, a lead sulfate mineral of the barite group, was first reported from Sterling Hill by Palache (1935) and from the Buckwheat Dump in Franklin by Cook (1973).
At Sterling Hill, anglesite occurs as an alteration of galena in the Noble and Passaic Pits.
At Franklin, it was found as microcrystals associated with malachite and cerussite in vugs in a galena-chalcocite vein cutting garnet-pyroxene rock.
