Anglezarke is an area of oustanding national beauty in Lancashire that is dominated by a series of reservoirs that supply water to Manchester and Liverpool.
The area sits on the edge of the Pennines in Lancashire and is close to to the town of Chorley.
Anglezarke itself is most wel known as a popular rock climbing destination for local climbers and is included in the guidebook Lancashire Rock published by the British Mountaineering Council

It was beyond the ancient boundaries of Anglezarke, so was presumably the Manor House in Healey (although Healey was not a manor but part of Heapey) and therefore not the house lived in by Countess Alice, although this cannot have been far away.
A re-perusal of the earliest estate maps of Anglezarke in the Lancashire Record Office might allow a future identification of her house, which I strongly suspect might have been on the site of The Cliffs, with the latest version still there today.

Anglezarke Reservoir - Was built in 1857 by Liverpool Corporation as part of the Rivington Pike Scheme to establish a chain of reservoirs to supply the growing population of Liverpool.
Parked at Anglezarke car park and the GPS merrily sent us on the viewpoint path,bad move.We got onto the right path (Woodland Trail) eventually and found it no problem.Nice walk.

A pair of juveniles was on Anglezarke reservoir on 2nd February and on Lower Rivington reservoir on 14th February.
One was on Upper Rivington reservoir and 5 by Anglezarke reservoir on 2nd April.
Male birds were noted on the edge of an Anglezarke moorland plantation on 15th August, at Sparks Brow, Rivington on 20th August, and at Spen Wood, Anglezarke on 16th September.

Human activity around Anglezarke can be traced back to pre-historic man. Dotted across Anglezarke Moor are two pre-historic sites which are still clearly visible.
To the west of High Bullough Reservoir is the Pike Stones, and northwest of here it Round Loaf, a landmark clearly visible from the route across Great Hill from White Coppice.
Overlooking the valley is a war memorial (left), commererating the crew of an RAF Wellington bomber which crashed there suring the second world war.

A female on Anglezarke reservoir on 25th October was the first for the late winter period.
One on Anglezarke moor on 30th April, and one at Dean Wood Rivington on 1st May were relatively late records.
The first was at Anglezarke on 10th May. A pair bred in a garden at Whittle and is thought to have had two broods.

However it is said that Witherite (a rare ore) was first discovered on Anglezarke Moor.
Further up on the moor near a ruin called Drinkwaters - named because of a clear spring - can be seen three mine shafts in a line and another further down the slope that still to this day has a fence around it.
Half a mile due east of the Manor House is Pike Stones, a chambered Long Cairn and a little over a mile to the north east is Devils Ditch and a large tumulus by the name of Roundloaf and beyond that, Standing Stones Hill.

Pochard could usually be found at the Waterman's cottage end of Anglezarke reservoir where up to 27 were present throughout the month.
Raptor records were confined to Kestrel and Sparrowhawk, with reports of the latter generally being from garden feeding stations.
Again no record of Brambling was received, but Siskin were fairly widespread and one or two Redpoll could usually be found in the alders at Anglezarke car park.

The first time it was very low (it may be that low now) and there was a spit of land that almost cut the lake in two (well give or take a few hundred yards!).

Anglezarke quarry lies slightly north of Horwich and at the bottom of Anglezarke moor and east of Anglezarke reservoirs.
Anglezarke is a excellent quarry, it looks like a big hole in the ground due to the methods of quarrying.
Here is where i did my first lead climb on a route called nightmare(HS 4b)which i was very happy with as this was my first time climbing outside.

Juvenile Great Crested Grebes were still surviving on Anglezarke and Lower Rivington reservoirs.
Towards the end of the month over-wintering wildfowl started to reappear with four Teal at Anglezarke and 12 at Withnell Fold scrapes, where there were also five Wigeon.

On Anglezarke reservoir, there were several resident adults but no sign of any young.
The latter in all probability was on its second brood.
The low water levels and consequent exposed mud at Anglezarke reservoir made it the prime site for waders in the area.

Location is the key while fishing this vast water best is to fish into the wind to find bream shoals with fish up to 10lbs.
With bags of bream up to 100lbs being caught in a session on Anglezarke Reservoir please use adequate keep nets that are staked out properly do not weigh your keep net down with rocks and stones as this can damage the fish.
No fish over 4lbs to be retained in keep nets please use your common sense and if necessarily empty your keep nets several times or use 2 keep nets a session.
