Anglia's experience reflects the turmoil that has hampered the industry since John Major's disastrous privatisation of the rail network in 1996.
For Anglia's directors, defeat came with a considerable silver lining: just before losing their franchise, they sold the company for £22m to a rival, FirstGroup, which mistakenly thought a new deal was almost in the bag.

The Great Eastern Railway was formed on the 1st July 1862 by the amalgamation of the Eastern Counties, the East Anglian, the Newmarket, Eastern Union and Norfolk Railway Companies.
It created a virtual private monopoly of railway operation throughout East Anglia which was only breached by the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway in the south and the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway in the north.
Anglia Railways was formed as a "Train Operating Company" within British Railways prior to its eventual privatisation.

GB Railways - which operates Anglia Railways and Hull Trains - has said it is still suffering from the aftermath of the Hatfield rail accident.
Despite a grim few months, GB Railways' chief executive Jeremy Long told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that passenger levels were finally beginning to pick up.
GB said its main Anglia Railways business had seen no growth in passenger income over the same period last year because of the Hatfield aftermath.

West Anglia Great Northern (‘London and S-E operators’) returned average results for both peak (82.5pc) and off-peak (79.5pc) services, but Central Trains’ improvement - from 71.3% last year to 72.9% this - was not enough to lift it from the bottom of the regional TOCs’ table.
Central Trains is to hand over to Anglia Railways the operating leases of its twelve stations east of Peterborough.
