Anglo-Saxon kingdom genealogy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Winchester manuscript lists the genealogy of the West Saxon kingdom (Wessex) in England up to King Alfred the Great and was written in the late 9th century.
From it, lists of kings can be drawn up, which shed light on the origins of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms.
Hence, he states in The search for Odin that this can be viewed as evidence for Odin in fact being a historical person, fathering a series of Anglo-Saxon kings who later conquered England and formed new kingdoms there.

There is no surviving royal genealogy for the South Saxons, and beyond a brief mention of a fight between Ceolwulf of Wessex and the South Saxons in 607 we know nothing of their fortune until their re-emergence into narrative history in the 660s (see entry on 661).
Saxon pirates may have been raiding the shores of Britain already by 365; in 367 there was a Roman military officer in charge of a series of fortresses along the south-eastern coast, and by the end of the century the coast itself was called the Saxon Shore.
Shortly after the division of the kingdom on Edwin's death (see entry on 633) both kingdoms were reunited under Oswald of Bernicia (634-42); after Oswald's death in 642 there were again separate rulers until Oswiu of Bernicia ordered the killing of Oswine of Deira in 651.

 The Anglo-Saxon Era
The inhabitants of the British kingdoms were descendents of the Romano-British population while the Anglo-Saxons were English-speaking Germanic people originating from the Anglian and Saxon regions of Continental Europe, within the modern territories of Holland, Southern Denmark and West Germany.
An Anglo-Saxon ruler of this period was a warlord with a duty to protect his people and lead them on expeditions of plunder and conquest.
It is probable that there was also a British kingdom based on York in the sixth century but where the boundary between this kingdom and Elmet was is not certain.

The fall of the South Saxons to Offa is also neatly demonstrated in the fact that an Osmund, king of the South Saxons, issued his own charter in 770 (S 49) but was reduced to witnessing a charter of Offa as ealdorman in 772 (S 108).
It may be that Coenwulf resumed control over the East Saxons in 798, as he did over the people of Kent and shortly after that over the East Angles, but from charters we learn of another East Saxon king, Sigered, in 811.
Contemporary sources neither confirm nor deny this, but the fact that Ælfwold then succeeded to the kingdom and drove Æthelred from the country suggests that he was seen to be responsible.

Saxon church windows, mentioned above, were usually narrow, small, and deep set, with casings that splayed out to both the interior and the exterior.
This is partly due to the habit the Saxons had of building with impermanent materials (wood), and partly to the very nasty habits of the Viking raiders (they burned down everything in sight).
No, all church towers are not Saxon, but the idea of towers was developed by the Saxons as a way of dealing with the threat of attack by the Danes.

Ancestors and Family of Alfred the Great of Wessex & Kent
Like other West Saxon kings, Alfred established a legal code; he assembled the laws of Offa and other predecessors and of the kingdoms of Mercia and Kent with his administrative regulations to form a body of Anglo-Saxon law.
The Vikings overcame two other major Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, East Anglia and Mercia, and their kings were either tortured to death or fled.
It is for his valiant defence of his kingdom against a stronger enemy, for securing peace with the Vikings and for his farsighted reforms in the reconstruction of Wessex and beyond, that Alfred - alone of all the English kings and queens - is known as 'the Great'.
