Anglo-Zulu War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Anglo-Zulu War was fought in 1879 between Britain and the Zulus, and signalled the end of the Zulus as an independent nation.
Two film dramatizations of the war are: Zulu (1964), which is based on the Battle at Rorke's Drift, and Zulu Dawn (1979), which deals with the Battle of Isandlwana.
In 1861, Umtonga, a brother of Cetshwayo, son of Zulu king Mpande, fled to the Utrecht district, and Cetshwayo assembled an army on that frontier.

South African Military History Society - Journal - The Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 - Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift
As the arms and military tactics of the Zulus are discussed in another article in this Journal it is not necessary to re-examine these but the encircling movement and the limitation placed on the Zulu warrior by the use of a stabbing assegai should be borne in mind.
An ultimatum was issued to the Zulus at the drift over the lower Tugela on 11 December 1878 but, as no reply had been received after twenty days had expired a concession was granted until 11 January 1879, after which a state of war was deemed to exist.
The main objective was to occupy the Zulu royal kraal at Ulundi by advancing on it from three directions, in an operation similar to the Zulu tactic of attacking from three sides by means of the main force or chest in the centre and extended left and right horns on each side.

 Anglo Zulu War
The Zulu conflict was presented by the whites as a clash between civilization and barbarism, between Christianity and paganism; the whites claimed that peace in southern Africa was impossible while King Cetshwayo's standing army existed.
The Zulu king, Cetshwayo, did have genuine grievances, he disputed with the South African Republic the ownership of the land to the east of the Pongola and Blood Rivers.
The Zulu king was not to be allowed to remain autonomous, he and the South African Republic was to come under the control of the crown.

iafrica.com news features 125 years on, Anglo Zulu War still fascinates Britain
It has spawned films, numerous books and even the name of a soccer hooligan gang — but the Anglo Zulu War is best remembered for inflicting one of the most humiliating defeats on colonial Britain at a battle fought 125 years ago this week.
The Anglo Zulu War began on January 11, 1879, when a 5000-strong British army invaded Zululand at Rorke's Drift.
War was waged by Sir Henry Bartle Frere, the British High Commissioner in South Africa, who believed that the robust and economically self-reliant Zulu kingdom was a threat to his government's policy of bringing the region's various British colonies, Boer republics and independent African groups under common control.

Following the battles of Isandlwana and the skirmish of Ntombi River, the Battle of Hlobane was the third and last major Zulu victory of the war.
At a critical moment in the battle, the abaQulusi and Khosa (prince) Mbelini kaMswati's renegade Swazi defenders were joined by the main Zulu army of some 20,000 warriors, and the British and Colonial forces under the command of Brevet Colonel Henry Evelyn Wood were routed.

The Anglo-Zulu War as Depicted in Soldiers' Letters - South African Military History Society - Journal
As one of the defenders told his sister, the Zulus 'did me out of my dinner, but we did a good many of them out of their tea'.(28) It is a shame no war artist was there to witness Kambula and record it.
Schermbruecker believed that Kambula 'finished the Zulu war, and I am proud of the part my men have taken in it.' Given that he was unaware of the further defeat of the Zulus at Gingindlovu and the subsequent relief of Eshowe, it was a shrewd judgement.(26)

IFP Speeches - 22 January 1999 - 120th Anniversary of the Anglo Zulu War
The Anglo-Zulu War indeed juxtaposed people who could have, and should have worked together but tragically closed that possibility which now after one hundred and twenty years can finally be seized and brought to its full realisation.
Because of the Zulu victory at the Battle of Isandlwana, the British Empire had to employ a greater number of soldiers to subjugate the Zulu Kingdom than it did to conquer the whole of India.
The descendants of those who once fought on this battlefield are now ready to go forth and recognise that the ancestry of their heritage is one of civilisation, law, order and unwavering commitment towards the everlasting human struggle for progress and better conditions of life.

The defeat of the Zulu king's forces in two actions, at either end of the country, and within days of each other, demoralised the Zulu, and proved to be the turning point of the war.
In retrospect, the war was provoked by an unwarranted act of British aggression.

At the outset of the Anglo-Zulu War, the British governor of Cape Colony and high commissioner for native affairs in South Africa, Sir Henry Edward Bartle Frere, and his military commander, General Chelmsford, had formulated their plan for the invasion of Zululand.
In March 1879, the Anglo-Zulu War was well into its third month, and two of the three British columns advancing into Zululand were stalled--one defeated at Isandlwana, the other surrounded and under siege at Eshowe.
Wood's goal was the destruction of the stronghold of the abaQulusi, a Nguni clan allied with the Zulus, located on a mountain 20 miles to the southeast, known as Hlobane (pronounced "shlo-BAH-nyeh").
