Levels of endemism are high in the Namibian Savanna Woodland and Kaokoveld Desert ecoregions to the west of the Angolan Mopane Woodlands.

In fact mopane develops a superficial root system which is able to suppress perennial grasses, and it is not uncommon to observe isolated trees in a circle of taller perennial grass, with only sparse annual grasses and herbs under the trees.

With increasing human and livestock populations, these woodlands have become more precious for livestock production, to the extent that farmers are beginning to feel the impact of uncontrolled wild fires, which have been largely regarded and accepted as a tool in range management.
Much of the original tall and single-stemmed mopane woodland has been converted into land for settlement and agriculture and now mainly persists as low and multi-stemmed mopane shrubland through continuous harvesting for the wide range of products that are used for locally (Gelens 1996).
This is particularly true when it comes to the mopane savannah of the north-western part of Namibia where the original single taller trees have disappeared and due to its strong resilience the trees are able to re-grow and coppice in the multiple young stems.

Birding towards the Angolan border is not very different to the Susuwe area and as this area is largely uncontrolled, I do not advise going more than about 5 km north of Susuwe.
The narrow fringe of riparian woodland and the narrow flood-plain are the most diverse from a vegetation point of view and it is here that birding is at its best and over 350 species have been recorded in the park.
Mopane woodlands seem to be the habitat in which to find Common Scops Owl and you should hear them throughout the night.
