Angra is a power metal band from São Paulo, Brazil known for putting regional elements in their songs.
Angra was formed in 1991 by ex-Spitfire duo guitarist Rafael Bittencourt and drummer Marco Antunes, as well as vocalist André Matos, who had recently left Viper, former Firebox bassist Luís Mariutti and guitarist Kiko Loureiro.
Angra would play live in Japan and appeared in The Rock Machine Festival in Spain, the famed Wacken Open Air event in Germany and The ProgPower Festival in Atlanta, Georgia, which was their first visit to the USA.

Angra always has a touring keyboardist in tow and the members are all recognized experts and instructors in their field.
Despite that, the band's approach is too melodic for the average heavy metal fan and further impaired by the glut of harmonization in the vocals and the abundance of keyboards.
Angra's fifth full-length album, Temple Of Shadows, is a concept album which narrates the story of an eleventh century crusader soldier called The Shadow Hunter.

Angra's sophomore effort was an ambitious, if not always "perfect" effort, which blended native South American sounds, Latin-influenced pop, and classical bombast with power metal.
Angra also incorporates a bit of orchestration to the music, which is evident immediately in the album opener "Wings of Reality".
The band is chock full of talent so they do get a nod in their favor for that, as well as showing there is some creativity at work.

 PROGRESSIVEWORLD.NET: REVIEWS BY STEPHANIE SOLLOW
Here was a premier progressive metal band, from a country outside of Europe -- namely Brazil -- with their star on an steep upward arc, even if the reaction to Fireworks wasn't with the same furvor that people were reacting to, say, Holy Land.
But, whereas before there was this unique "Angra" quality, that little bit extra is gone -- and I can't say which of the departed members it can be attributed to, other than to say that Falaschi has a singing voice that is very much the norm for this genre.
Angra's status as one of the premier progressive metal bands is intact, their star is still ascending, and Rebirth is welcome return and continuation.

When Matos and Co left Angra, most of their fans, myself included, assumed that it was all over, and even the fact that the band managed to release another studio album the following year ("Rebirth" - 2001) didn't make any difference to both their fans and the music press.
