In the News (Fri 21 Nov 08)

  The Rökkr: Angrboda
Angrboda is best remembered in the Norse sagas for her role as the Hag of Ironwood, the giantess with whom Loki would sometimes reside.
The vast progeny of Angrboda is a mythic memory of her manifestation as that creative Feminine force that underlies the creation, and the continuance of the Norse kozmos.
Angrboda, for whom the affair with Loki was as for purely wyrdic purposes as it was for him, was married to the storm-giant Eggthir-Gymir, with whom she gave birth to the beautiful Gerda, who would later marry Frey, and thus secure the wyrdic Sword of Victory for the Rökkr forces.

Angrboda or Augurboda ("Herald of Sorrow") was a giantess and the mistress of Loki.
When her three children became to powerful, the Aesir banished them: Jormungand was threwn into the sea (by Odin); Tyr bound the wolf Fenrir with the noose Gleipnir; and Hel was banished into Helheim, where she became its ruler.
Sometimes Angrboda was identified with the giantess Aurboda (but they aren't definitively one and the same!).

Angrboda went to the water's edge daily and gave it meat, and stroked it, for she did not wish it to become so wild that it forgot the touch of affection.
Angrboda sensed his desire, and she held stubbornly to her vow not to try and hold him, so when he said that he was going to be more in Asgard than in Jotunheim for a time, she said only, "Go, then.

The fact that Angrboda now dwells in the Ironwood, although on a former occassion nothing more remained of her than a half-burnt heart, proves that the attempt to destroy her with fire was unsuccessful, and that she arose again in bodily form after this cremation and became the mother and nourisher of werewolves.
Thus the identity of Gullveig-Heid and Angrboda is still further established by the fact that both the one and the other is called the mother of the Fenris family.
Before the crisis comes Angrboda has fostered that host of "sons of world-ruin" which Loki is to lead to battle, and a magic sword which she has kept in the Ironwood is given to Surt, in whose hand is to be the death of Frey, the lord of harvests.

It tells the story of a giantess named Angrboda, who lived in a place known as Giantland.
There came a time when Angrboda entered into a relationship with the trickster demigod, Loki, and from that union they produced three children.
The first child was the devouring Lupine, Fenrir(Fenris)-Wolf, the second child was the wyrm, Iormungard, the Midgard serpent of the ocean that encircled the Earth, while the third child was simply known as Hel.

They are often the spirits of primordial concepts such as fire, ice, death, and the underworld, and can be compared to the Titans of Greek mythology, or the Nephilim of Semetic myth.
Included in their number are Hela (goddess of death and the underworld), Iormungand (the world serpent), Fenrir (kozmic wolf), Loki (trickster god), Angrboda (mother goddess and teacher of seidr), Surt (fire giant), and Nidhogg (tellurian dragon).
It is important not only because it is given by Angrboda, the Rökkr mother goddess, but because of its great age compared to some other Norse texts.
