Weapons of Middle-earth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Angrist (Sindarin: Iron-cutter) was a knife made by Telchar of Nogrod and borne by Curufin.
It was taken from Curufin by Beren, who used it to cut a Silmaril out of Morgoth's Iron Crown.
It was forged during the First Age by the Dwarf Telchar, making it a cousin to the blade Angrist which cut a Silmaril from the crown of Morgoth.

Angrist and Guryan look at teacher quality and compensation in states and districts that require and do not require certification testing.
Angrist and Guryan estimated teacher quality by looking at the average SAT score of teachers' undergraduate institution.
One issue that Angrist and Guryan do not investigate is whether the benefit from getting rid of a very bad teacher is significantly higher than the cost of losing a very good teacher.

Angrist and Guryan believe this type of impact is "ambiguous," and I agree.
In the Angrist and Guryan paper, teacher quality was estimated by average SAT score of the undergraduate institution from which each teacher graduated.
When using this estimate of teacher quality, what Angrist and Guryan apparently found is that state-mandated certification testing didn't necessarily identify the teachers who came from the schools with the highest SAT means.

Their results were less clear cut for older workers.*2 They cited the cost to employers of compliance with the ADA and fear of lawsuits as potential causes of the observed decline in employment.
Acemoglu and Angrist’s (2001) emphasis on the ADA as a deterrent to increased employment triggered a lively debate about whether the ADA or other factors were responsible.
Acemoglu and Angrist (2001) use an array of statistical models to investigate whether the post-1992 decline in the relative employment of working age people with disabilities (using the CPS one-period work limitation definition) was an unintended consequence of the 1992 implementation of the ADA employment provisions.

In this note we present evidence that the association between quarter of birth and earnings is too strong to be fully explained by compulsory school attendance laws in the samples studied by Angrist and Krueger.
Moreover, while the association between quarter of birth and educational attainment was weaker for more recent cohorts, we found no evidence that the strength of the relationship between quarter of birth and earnings was also weaker in those cohorts.
In addition, we present evidence that suggests the association between quarter of birth and earnings or other labor market outcomes existed for cohorts that were not bound by compulsory school attendance laws.
