ENJOY PERU - ORCHIDS IN PERU - NATURE
There are hiking paths in Ecuador which are excellent for viewing orchids, such as Los Palmitos, near Quito, which leads you to fascinating orchid gardens containing almost 200 species, some of which are so small they can only be viewed with a magnifying glass.
The so-called "Land of the Orchids" is found in the department of San Martin in Peru, where such orchids such as Anguloa, Cattleya, Catasetum, Bollea, Brassia, Coryanthes, Lycaste are to be found in abundance.
Beautiful orchids can also be found in Bolivia amongst the ruins of Tiahunaco or Samaipata, or at the sides of modern roads, or on the banks of many rivers and lakes.

Now there are some 38 Lycaste, 36 Ida and nine Anguloa and these new species have been identified either by splitting older taxa or from discovery in the wild, and introduction via nurseries, but always from having a living database to refer to.
I have identified (one hopes all, but there must always be ones which escape) the lycastes and anguloas in the world literature, and from over 550 publications have extracted 312 synonyms of the existing valid names, and all the type references.
Finally I supplied leaf tissue of a range of lycastes and anguloas for DNA analysis and Angela Ryan and her colleagues at Kew performed phylogenetic studies to assess the relationship of each species to each other.
