  'Angus'
Angus" is a pitiful little film about a fat teenager's pathetic attempt to fit in with his thinner, more popular peers.
Though Angus seems to gain some self-esteem from reminding Grandpa to take his pills, their relationship is not only emotionally arid but worthless in terms of plot.
Angus and Troy are frequently victimized by the popular kids under the leadership of golden-haired Rick (James Van Der Beek), the class president and the football team's quarterback.

 BBC - Films - review - Smoke
During the course of the film, Rashid tracks down his real father, Auggie's ex-girlfriend arrives to borrow money to help the daughter she claims is his, and a gang of violent armed robbers hassle Paul to retrieve the cash they say Rashid stole from them.
This photographic element of the film, discussed near the beginning, returns in the final scene, when Auggie relates his christmas story to Paul.
Like the film itself, Auggie's story is a charming and whimsical tale about the importance of friendship, family bonds, racial harmony, and going out of your way to help others.

FILM REVIEW -- `Angus' -- We Feel His Pain / Fat-kid story sweet but nothing new
The title character, Angus Bethune, is played charmingly and poignantly by screen newcomer Charlie Talbert, a teenager who's got just the right amount of baby fat on his husky body, and whose soft voice exudes innocence and a gentle heart waiting to be trampled on.
Angus' only pal is a big-eared, freckle-faced kid named Troy (Chris Owen), who serves as his spirited personal adviser and listening post.
And Angus loves the old goat -- he knows that his grandfather, for all his bluster and swagger, is listening to his heart.

While not really a "kids' movie," Angus is a workmanlike coming-of-age film, full of slapstick and insult trading among the youthful cast and their parents.
Angus is played by newcomer Charlie Talbert (who was discovered in a Wendy's restaurant).
The predictability of Angus is mind-numbing, but thankfully it's pretty funny along the way, especially Scott's crusty grandfather (note that the humor may not be totally suitable for children).

...Starring Angus Macfadyen Articles 'The Scot Pack' Excerpt
Playing Robert the Bruce, in a film that went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture of 1995, was a phenomenal break for an actor who had never made a film before and who was approaching his thirty-first birthday when the film went into production at the foot of Ben Nevis in June 1994.
It was an intriguing historical siding, but the film botched it by trying to shape it as a romance, in which Macfadyen was a German pilot pursuing the same girl as the American pilot he had shot down.
When he turned up for filming he had actually put on another five, and tight-fitting costumes had to be redesigned.

This is why ``Angus,'' both the movie and the character for whom the film is named, is such an emotional trigger.
Angus is an overweight high school freshman with a heart of gold.
Angus' relationships with his grandfather, his mother, his best friend and his enemies are the strength of the plot.

Meanwhile, Angus lives with — and gets advice from — his truck-driver mother (Kathy Bates) and his 73-year-old retired grandfather (George C. Scott), who is about to marry a much-younger woman and is positively giddy about it.
Angus also gets advice from his geeky best friend (Chris Owen), especially when Angus, via a practical joke, finds himself king to Melissa's queen at the upcoming fall dance.
The film does fall down a bit in places — such as when it makes fun of the physical appearance of a weird science teacher late in the film, which seems to run counter to everything the film is striving to say.
