Get Into In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida At Tate Britain - 24 Hour Museum - official guide to UK museums, galleries, exhibitions ...
The exhibition is the joint vision of three Young British Artists (YBAs), Angus Fairhurst, Damien Hirst and Sarah Lucas and the title, very potently, sets the scene for an exhibition full of attention-grabbing and interestingly distorted art.
Fairhurst, who at 38 is the baby of the YBAs, is the least known of the group.
But, as Gregor Muir, another curator of the exhibition, puts it, "Fairhurst seems to be the hinge between the two other artists, as he has worked with both of them separately".

Over the past 15 years, Angus Fairhurst has developed different strands of ideas and works, keeping them constantly re-visiting, re-thinking and re-working, often to such a degree that one work or group of works might have no apparent formal properties in common with any of the other.
From the outset of his career Angus Fairhurst played with the viewers as well as the art world's expectations, creating possibilities within the impossible - or in his own words, "operating in a false dawn on the road to personal and artistic freedoms".

 Meadow Gallery - Angus Fairhurst
Angus Fairhurst was born in Kent in1966 and works and lives in London.
Fairhurst uses a variety of media from painting to sound, animation or sculpture.
The motif of the pond evokes the myth of Narcissus, the greek youth who fell in love with his image and was drowned trying to embrace it and perhaps refers to the current stranglehold of the image in our society.

What Fairhurst does, also and of course not always, is staging and subsequently failing those normative expectations of completion or artistic accomplishment.

Angus Fairhurst's portfolio of four screenprints, one of which was previously included in the London Portfolio, are in the form of enlarged postcards with a text message.
The images are similar to those in Fairhurst's photographic work, "Man with Dream Colours".
The separation of the use of colour, to convey emotive content, from the monochrome photography of the man's outward appearance is typical of Fairhurst's analytical approach to the processes of art.

This exhibition of works on paper by Angus Fairhurst presents a series of drawings and proposals (negations and affirmations), which together stand as a methodology for making and breaking form.
Shown in three sections within a cycle of developing ideas, the works range from written proposals, erased postcards and collages to sketches for animations.
The whole charts a formal progression, beginning with works where the image is made by removing elements of or obliterating found imagery and ending with works built up by adding and layering repeated elements.

 apocalypse - angus fairhurst
Following his inclusion in the seminal exhibition 'Freeze' (1998) which unleashed onto an unsuspecting public the now notorious generation of 'young British artists', Angus Fairhurst has developed his own unique brand of humorous critique and interventionist artworks.
Using a variety of media including painting, animation, sound, photography and performance, Fairhurst's fascination lies in the mechanisms and motifs of a consumer culture whose capacity to continually rebrand itself is matched only by the insatiability of the consumer appetite it feeds.
The workings of the artworld itself have also been targeted: in one of his telephone works, Fairhurst connected pairs of London galleries so that they both picked up repeatedly in response to the same call, kick-starting a series of paranoid greetings and accusatory questions.

Fairhurst shares his studio - and his home - with fellow artist Sarah Lucas, has made videos with Damien Hirst (A'Couple of Cannibals Eating a Clown), and, like all those who have appeared before him in the ABSOLUT ORIGINALS collection, seems determined to stretch the parameters of his art.
Fairhurst's group, Low Expectations, comprised a bunch of his artist friends who merely mimed to the music for a baffled audience.
Their next "gig" added an extra dimension: a double-screen video projection of Fairhurst's computerised animations formed visual loops to correlate with the music.
