Angus   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Angus South had been considered a 'must win' for the Tories with newspapers commenting at the time that if Mrs Thatcher did not win this seat then she would not be going to Downing Street.
In Angus East, Andrew Welsh polled 19,006 votes, 530 less than in 1987, while Dr Ronald Harris increased the Tory vote by 60 to 18,052, thus cutting Andrew Welsh's majority to 954 with the declaration being delayed due to the Tories insisting on a recount.
Despite the boundary changes, it was a safe bet that the SNP Whip and ex-MP for Angus East and Angus South would be representing Angus after the next general election and indeed he increased his majority from a notional 473 in 1992 to an actual 10,189 in 1997.
