The Aniene valley and Villa Gregoriana in Tivoli - UNESCO World Heritage Centre
The Aniene River is the territory's most important stream; it originates at the boundary between the Latium and Abruzzo regions, in the Simbruini Mountains, unwinds through the valley to reach Tivoli and, after the drop in height over the large waterfall, arrives, through the Roman campagna (countryside), to Rome, where it flows into the Tiber.
Collection of the waters of the Aniene began in the mid-2nd century BC with the first aqueduct built by the praetor Quintus Marcius, to which two more were added during the age of the Claudii, along the same axis and overlapping or parallel in some points.
The bond between the Aniene and the town of Tivoli is ancient and deeply rooted.

 Aniene - Wikipedia

After the dead of the saint, the Valley of the Aniene was involved, like many other zones of Italy, in the Gothic-Byzantine war, forcing the inhabitants to take refuge in less accessible places, giving life to the centers of Vallepietra, Trevi and Filettino.
Between VI and IX century, series of barbaric incursions left recognizable traces in the territory; in particular were destroyed, from part of the Saraceni, twelve of the thirteen monasteries founded from S. Benedict, only leaving the one of S. Scolastica.
Moreover an earthquake in the 1298, a successive flood of the Aniene, the explosion of the plague and an other earthquake in the 1348 rendered the life of the citizen particularly difficult.

For this reason, when the two temples were built, it was necessary to create an artificial platform on which raising them; near the cavern of Albunea (of which Orazio says) and the sacred forest of the founder of the ancient Tibur: Tiburno.

Residents in the area of Marano Equo have long sought to cure a number of pathologies by drinking the waters, that have several properties according to the different springs in the area: diuretic, magnesian, ferruginous and sulphurous.
Pius VI drank the waters in the 18th century before being elected pontiff and always visited the Aniene Valley to eat trout with the locals on his way to the Abbey of Subiaco, where he had been an abbot.
Nevertheless, despite being repeatedly praised, the waters of Marano Equo have yet to become a main attraction for tourists, perhaps because of their proximity to Fiuggi, or maybe because the area is not well connected to the main highways.

Anticoli Corrado, where the painters found their models
Anticoli Corrado is a town of less than a thousand inhabitants, located on the top of a hill overlooking the lower valley of the Aniene (Anio in Latin), a river called in the past Teverone, because it joined the Tibur (Tevere) near Ponte Milvio.
Anticoli derives from the Latin ante colles which means opposite the hills because it faces the Appennines, the range of mountains which divide the Italian peninsula.
The development of the valley owes a lot to Emperor Nero, who built a large villa in the upper valley of the Aniene, at a location known as Sublaqueum (today the town of Subiaco) named after the three artificial lakes embellishing the villa of the Emperor.

These two different views can be both valid if we consider that the distance stated by Dionisius was referred to length, while that quoted by Strabo to width; therefore the land of the Sabini was compared to the point of a lance, extended towards the sea between the Tiber and the Teverone rivers.
These are the most certain boundaries of this region, included between the Apennines on the one hand for about a hundred miles, surrounded by Umbria, Picenum, the Vestini and the Marsi, while the Tiber and Aniene were the natural limits on the side of Etruria and Latium.
This land therefore began at the junction of the Tiber and Aniene rivers, and followed the right bank of the Aniene as far as Varia (Vicovaro), entering the region of Aequi.

Water is the predominant element both in nature and in the monumental villas in the Aniene Valley.
The city, which named the consular road, is one of the most important in the Rome province and counts a rich historic-archaeological and natural heritage; it thus deserves two itineraries which will visit its extraordinary surviving villas and the beautiful protected areas of the Inviolata Archaeological park and the Monte Catilo Nature Reserve.
Finally, the third itinerary unfolds along the Aniene Valley, and touches old towns perched on mountains, full of history and fascination, where ancient traditions are still alive while at the same time culture and art continue to thrive, as is proved by the Civic Museum of Modern Art in Anticoli Corrado.
