Anier Garcia of Cuba produced a near-flawless run to upstage his more experienced rivals and give his wife a great wedding anniversary gift on Monday—victory in the Olympic men's 110 hurdles.
Garcia, the 1999 world silver medallist behind Jackson, kept his cool and his technique to stretch his lead and crossed the line almost two metres clear, a huge gap in an event usually decided by hundredths of a second.
Garcia's 13.07 in Lausanne in July was the fastest time of the season until Johnson's 12.97 three weeks later and he was full of confidence coming to Sydney.

The Cuban was closing in on his rival towards the finish but he clipped the last hurdle and ended just short in the dip for the line.

Olympic 110 metres hurdles champion Anier Garcia has admitted he is uncertain for the world athletics championships in Paris later this month after a recent thigh injury flared up at the PanAm Games in Santo Domingo on Friday.
Garcia, who sustained the injury to his right thigh in training three weeks ago, could only finish fifth in 13.57sec in his heat and may now miss the August 23-31 event in Paris.
