Animal Collective - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Animal Collective is a New York City-based group from Baltimore, Maryland often recognized as an experimental music band.
Although the band is often classified as psych folk or noise rock, it is hard to define the Animal Collective sound as they often experiment with new styles and ideas.
In 2002, Animal Collective also attained notoriety for their appearance on Arto Lindsay's album Invoke (Righteous Babe Records).

The members of the collective (Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Deaken, and Geologist) now have a home base from which to communicate, and it is called Paw Tracks.
Having already released over 5 records and with two successful US tours (one with friends The Black Dice) under their belts, the Animal Collective are now poised to significantly alter the popular music landscape.
The Animal Collective are creating the new spiritual music for the 21st century: music that is aware of tradition without being tied down to it; music unconcerned with borders and definitions.

Animal Collective started its set on Sunday night at Webster Hall with rough scraping sounds, a loop of a shout and a swelling chordal drone.
And Animal Collective harnessed it in ways all its own: not the ominous fixations of the Velvet Underground, not the oceanic expanses of Sonic Youth, not the jittery stasis of TV on the Radio, but something at once joyful, obsessive and oddly pastoral.
Even as the Animal Collective's songs spiraled into soundscapes or melted themselves down, there was something logical and organic within: the rigor of the New York drone coupled with the whimsy of a band that has created its own habitats and laws of evolution.

Fairy tales and star-children: These are impressions of 'The Beyond' for imaginative children, and it's this mentality that Animal Collective explore and evoke.
It might seem whimsical or silly, but only in the sense that these perceptions are the birthrights of all children, and this band have such facility with their musical environment that they manage to turn something primal into something almost timeless.
Musically, Animal Collective sound more "pop" here than they ever have, which is to say most of the songs have clear melodies that beg to be doubled and tripled by you or anyone else who cares to join.

Animal Collective formed in 2000 as a collaboration between the group's two core members Avey Tare (nee David Portner) and Panda Bear (nee Noah Lennox).
On "Meet the Light Child" the Collective's voices once again become the centerpiece of the song, as is the chanting on "Another White Singer (Little White Glove)", which quite doesn't have the force of a live Animal show though it has the potential to convey it.
Call it post-rock, psychedelia, prog-pop, or whatever other music category comes to mind, in the end, Animal Collective creates melodies with their vocals or with their instruments that are either accessible or challenging -- sometimes both at once -- and molds it all into tracks and albums with a spacey, out of this world sound.

Animal Collective seems more inspired by the elements within, rather than in an imitation of that music: There are bombastic drums that would be at home on Pet Sounds on the dynamically thrilling "Grass," and on "Flesh Canoe" there are guitar voicings taken from the pages of Harrison's All Things Must Pass.
Animal Collective uses all those sounds (and more) in their seventh album, the freakily beautiful "Feels." With pop melodies that are never catchy and instrumentation that is never ordinary, they manage to weave together songs that break away creatively from their past work.
Here, the Collective manage to advance on their sound in a way that opens them up to new ideas and interpretations, yet at the same time, manages to retain the key Animal Collective sound that has been developing nicely though the previous albums Here Comes the Indian and the classic mighty Sung Tongs.

The first spin is a tad disconcerting because, with its electric guitar and more trad band set-up, Animal Collective sound for the first time like what they've always been to detractors with more outré tastes: an indie rock band.
Such moments are why the adolescent unpredictability of Animal Collective is such an asset-- they're able to tap into the narrative of Western pop while making it their own.
Animal Collective's signature approach to composition-- in which open chords are strummed repeatedly for longer than seems necessary to create a unique sense of tension relieved only by vocal chants and howls-- finds its apotheosis over these eight minutes.

Animal Collective are on such a hot streak right now that the appearance of a vast army of player haters and naysayers is almost imminent.
The only falter comes during the instrumental "Baleeh Sample." "Sample" seems like the Collective's attempt to recreate the atmospheric creepiness of their concert staple "Wastered" (from the split 10" with Black Dice), but it doesn't quite take root because of the unnatural spaceship effect that constantly buzzes in and out throughout the guitar strumming.
The major difference, however, and the reason this could fit in the Animal Collective mold, is due to its inconsistent song structures.
