Needcoffee.com DVD Review: Animal Farm (1954)
And this is definitely not a kiddie film: bits like a surrealistic slaughterhouse hell in the minds of the pigs or the on-camera death of characters let you know that you're far from the Magic Tea Cup Ride.
Granted, the dialogue is few and far between in the film, but the idea that one guy did all of what there is is pretty daunting.
And while, sure, some of it looks simplistic and straight from a kiddie film, a lot of it is very spare and effective.

 Animal Farm (1954)
from Attleboro, MA Not to degrade Animal Farm by calling it a cartoon, I am amazed that it was even made into an animated film back in 1954.
Dealing with dictatorship, communist theory, military warlords, the democratic process and political theories, Animal Farm throws so much at the viewer / reader that it is still a highly acclaimed story.
Having more of a positive ending with hope, Animal Farm doesn't end as powerful as it does in its original written version.

 Animated Films
The best-known work of the Halas and Batchelor animation studios was the adult-themed Animal Farm (1954), the first animated color feature film made in England.
The allegorical tale, based on George Orwell's 1945 satirical political novel, told of animals at Manor Farm who were led by pigs Napoleon and Snowball to rebelliously overthrow oppressive Farmer Jones, take over the farm, and form a free, egalitarian socialist utopia.
The film was noted for its extensive use of the animation technique of rotoscoping, in which human actors were filmed and 'traced' as cartoon characters.

British cinema and the cold war: the state, propaganda and consensus
Cinema was considered to be a vital agent in the campaign, and in 1950 the Workshop brokered the purchase of the film rights to Animal farm by Louis de Rochement Associates.
De Rochement, who had already made several anti-communist movies in Hollywood, secured the British animation team John Halas and Joy Batchelor, and the film was finally released in 1954.
British Cinema and the cold war throws considerable light on a hitherto dark corner of the screen and is compulsive reading for anyone interested in the interaction of film and politics.
