Animal shelter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Animal shelters, or what used to be known as pounds or dog pounds, are either governmental or private organizations that provide temporary homes for stray, surrendered, or abandoned pet animals.
The animal is kept at the shelter until it is reclaimed by the owner, adopted to a new owner, placed with another organization, or euthanized.
Animal Welfare groups and volunteers are attempting to change that point of view by educating owners and potential owners about the lifelong commitment involved in adopting an animal, how to be a responsible pet owner, about the large number of adoptable animals available at shelters, and about the often poor condition of pet shop pets.

Euthanasia - LearnThis.Info Enclyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Euthanasia in a wider sense includes assisting someone to commit suicide, in particular physician-assisted suicide (PAS); some also extend it to the practice of not interfering with suicide, such as allowing a patient to decline vital medication or treatment or honoring a patient's Do Not Resuscitate directive.
Advocates of euthanasia generally insist that euthanasia should be voluntary, requiring informed consent, that it should only be used in cases of terminal illness that cause unbearable suffering.
The second type of argument against euthanasia is that it is not prudent to advocate it; that eventually we all may be suffering, and if we think ahead, we may think it better if the doctors on whom we depend are not tempted to perform euthanasia.

Euthanasia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Euthanasia as a topic is often highly-charged—emotionally, politically, and morally.
It is considered to be euthanasia by some, but under current law and medical practice it is considered a form of palliative care.
Euthanasia is also central topic in the Spanish movie Mar adentro, showing how the Galician fisherman RamĂłn Sampedro fought a 28-year campaign in support of euthanasia and his right to end his own life.

Euthanasia (Greek, "good death") is the practice of killing a person or animal, in a painless or minimally painful way, for merciful reasons, usually to end their suffering.
Advocates of euthanasia generally insist that euthanasia should be voluntary, requiring informed consent, and that it should only be used in cases of terminal illness that cause unbearable suffering, or an eventual, complete loss of awareness.
Euthanasia of children under the age of 12 remains technically illegal, however Dr. Eduard Verhagen has documented several cases and, together with colleagues and prosecutors, has developed a protocol to be followed in those cases.

 Small animal euthanasia at home
If the animal is largely inactive and small enough (CO euthanasia is not recommended for animals over 2 pounds), a one-gallon jar or juice pitcher works well, or a one-gallon plastic jug could be used if the top is partially cut off so it will hinge up and can later be taped closed.
If the animal is too active, or you can't obtain the materials needed for the above procedure, you could put the animal in a small cage, a travel cage, or box with holes in it.
The hose from the first glass runs along the top of the euthanasia chamber, is plugged at the end (a piece of sponge works), and has a dozen or so holes drilled into it so that the CO is evenly dispersed as it enters the chamber.

Animal shelters are far from immune to the economic and cultural divides that plague U.S. society, and the roadmap for ending euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals must reflect those differences.
In 2002, Animal Sheltering reported on the communities that are getting back on the high road, setting aside their differences in the name of progress toward a better world for homeless animals.
An introduction to humane animal euthanasia by injection, how to prepare euthanasia, the different methods of administration, and coping with euthanasia-related stress are just some of the topics discussed in the six-tape series.

American Humane: Newsroom: Fact Sheets: Euthanasia
National euthanasia statistics are difficult to pinpoint because animal care and control agencies are not uniformly required to keep statistics on the number of animals taken in, adopted, euthanized, or reclaimed.
In 1997 roughly 64% of the total number of animals that entered shelters were euthanized -- approximately 2.7 million animals in just these 1,000 shelters. These animals may have been put down due to overcrowding, but may have been sick, aggressive, injured, or suffered something else.
American Humane believes that all dogs and cats adopted from public or private animal care and control agencies must be sterilized before being allowed to leave the shelter and supports passage of state laws mandating this practice.
