  Animal Technician
The Animal Technician Series is differentiated from the Animal Health Technician Series in that emphasis is on the management, supervision, and/or direct environmental and routine care of a specific group of animals rather than on the performance of technical paraveterinary health care and diagnostic procedures on a colony-, campus-, or hospital-wide basis.
Assistant to an Animal Resources Manager or Supervisor, in experimental animal resources facilities of such size and complexity, that a full-time alternate supervisor is required in the management and coordination of the technical staff.
Leader in an experimental animal resources facility, during regular weekend assignments, with responsibility for inspection, observation, and treatment of unusual or unexpected conditions that arise, requiring immediate action and notification to higher level supervisors and investigators, as well as responsibility for repetitive activities that must occur daily.

ILAR Journal Online, Volume 41(2) 2000: Humane Endpoints for Animals Used in Biomedical Research and Testing
Experimental animal models of cancer provide a link between how cancer develops at the molecular or cellular level and how the condition manifests and may be treated in complex, living organisms.
For example, when the experimental objective is serial transplantation of tumors or determination of the oncogenicity of a cell line, the development of a single tumor of a predetermined size may act as both a scientific and humane endpoint.
Established methods of inducing experimental cancer in animals include exposure to carcinogenic substances, local or whole body irradiation, inoculation with viruses or malignant cells, genetic mutation, or (increasingly) the introduction of oncogenes by genetic modification of animals or transfection of cells.

Experimental Animal Testing Paper   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
In the beginning animal testing may have been necessary for cosmetics and toiletries, but now there are alternatives to animal testing available.
“Millions of animals are studied in research labs each year in order to test the effects of experimental treatments that ethical issues prevent from first being tested on humans, and because the behavior of animals in interesting in and itself” (Kimmel 236).
The smaller number of animals is used to determine minimum and maximum toxicity, and a limit is set on the number of doses to be tested.

These animals are "immunocompromised," much like a cancer, transplant or AIDS patient, and are therefore, susceptible to opportunistic pathogens and can quickly become sick if they are not protected from common infections.
Trudeau Institute's animal facilities were built more than 20 years ago and were not designed to house these new mouse models that require specific sterile conditions.
Animal rooms at both sites have been enlarged to accommodate highly technical racks that can be used to house mice in cages where food, water, bedding and air supply are sterile.

 Compassion for Laboratory Animals
Typically a laboratory animal was labeled with an identification code (Arluke, 1988) and considered as a standardized biological research tool (Hummer, 1965; Bowd, 1980) that was referred to as "it" rather than "he" or "she" to guarantee scientific integrity (Reinhardt, 1996).
The objectification of laboratory animals was often associated with a lack of interest in the welfare of the deindividualized research object (cf.
Figure 1 Primary attributes of animal research personnel must be feelings of compassion toward animals to guarantee their optimal care and to minimize stress-related variability of research data collected from them.

Animal experiments also showed that Librium could assist in dealing with withdrawal although as some animals died, it also suggested there was a lethal side-effect.[7] In fact clinical tests carried out at an earlier time had already revealed that Librium was effective,[8] and it continues to be used in relation to alcohol withdrawal.
Animal experimentation did not support this view,[1] and some fourteen animal trials failed to show any connection between benzene and cancer.[2] Therefore workers were put at considerable risk in view of there being no 'evidence' of a link.
Animal experimentation also indicated that digitalis raised the blood pressure and as a result of this, the drug was widely considered to be dangerous for certain patients and should not be prescribed to them.

The mouse is the most useful and important experimental animal in biomedical research and is one of the major resources in RIKEN BRC.
The overall goal of the experimental animal division is to collect valuable mouse strains and distribute high-quality, well-characterized inbred, mutant and genetically engineered mice to investigators.
To this end, we shall select and collect mice strains important to the biomedical research community; rederive mice to a specific pathogen-free state; cryopreserve gametes and embryos; perform genotyping, phenotyping and infectious-disease monitoring to ensure the quality of the mice; and distribute mice to investigators as live mice, cryopreserved embryos or sperms.

Keeping aquatic animals in a laboratory setting can be very challenging to those responsible for these delicate and, for the most part wild animals.
As most aquatic animals used in research are ectothermic, the temperatures of the system in which the animals are being held dictate the rate of these physiological functions as well as immunilogical fitness.

Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments
FRAME considers that the current scale of animal experimentation is unacceptable.
Our long-term goal is the total elimination of laboratory animal use, through the development, validation and acceptance of replacement alternative methods.
Until this goal is reached, we also support efforts to reduce the numbers of animals used through better science and better experimental design, and to refine procedures so that the suffering of any animals necessarily used is minimised.
