  Food Diversion Through Animal Feed
The two main ways to divert food to animal feed are (1) direct feed to animals, and (2) converting residuals to a grain supplement, which is then fed to animals.
Animal feed can be a viable option if a significant quantity of food residuals is generated on a regular basis and storage space is available to keep the material fresh until it can be transported.
Animal feed manufacturers that use food residuals combine foods to make a "recipe" that is appropriate for specific animals.

  Kids.net.au - Encyclopedia Agriculture -
Agriculture is the process of producing food, feed, and fiber by cultivation of certain plants and the raising of domesticated animals.
Increasingly, besides food for humans and animal feeds, agriculture produces goods such as cut flowers, ornamental and nursery plants, fertilizers, animal hides[?], leather, industrial chemicals (starch, ethanol, and plastics), fibers (cotton, wool, hemp, and flax), and fuels (ethanol, methane, biodiesel).
Animal husbandry means breeding and raising animals for meat or to harvest animal products (like milk, eggs, or wool) on a continual basis.

Animal Welfare Issues Compendium (September 1997)
Narveson (1986) is critical of Regan's (1983) statement that animals have "concepts" and that "perception, memory, desire, belief, self-consciousness, intention, a sense of the future" are among the leading attributes of the mental life of normal mammalian animals aged one year or more.
Animal welfare activists suppose that animals may be conscious of suffering if either the structure of their nervous systems or their reactions to stimuli resemble those of humans.
Animal activists who picket or demonstrate at livestock shows or sales are not there to try to change exhibitors' minds about raising livestock; they are there primarily to influence the attitudes of the general public.

 Sustainable Table: The Issues: Feed
When animals are fed conventional (or industrial) feed, which can include animal products, antibiotics, and other unnatural substances such as chewing gum and chicken manure, their health is put in jeopardy.
Sustainable farmers use feeds grown without large amounts of pesticides in order to supplement what the animals eat through grazing, and their farms rely on natural pasture systems that benefit nature and animals.
This manure fertilizes the earth which provides the feed that farm animals come back and eat again and again, and it is free of the artificial hormones and excessive antibiotics and chemicals that pass through industrial animal waste into the environment.

 GM-FREE IRELAND : ANIMAL FEED
This scaremongering is an attempt to use rising animal feed prices to weaken EU GMO policy when infact the blind rush for agrofuels and poor weather conditions are causing the worldwide shortages in key feed crops.
The EU market for meat, poultry and dairy produce that comes from animals fed on a certified non-GM diet is thus growing rapidly, amidst mounting evidence of their negative health, environmental and legal impacts.
Animal feed from GM-free crops that have subsequently become contaminated unintentionally by GMOs (during harvesting, storage, transport or processing) is not subject to traceability or labelling requirements if it contain GMO traces below the 0.9% threshold level, provided the presence of such GM material is "adventitious" or "technically unavoidable", i.e.

The purpose of this guidance is to identify recommended maximum fumonisin levels that FDA considers adequate to protect human and animal health and that are achievable in human foods and animal feeds with the use of good agricultural and good manufacturing practices.
As part of a long-term strategy for the control of fumonisins in the U.S. food and feed supply, FDA will participate in national and international scientific workshops to gather information that may be used in further assessment of the potential risk to animals and humans from exposure to fumonisins.
The recommended maximum levels for fumonisins in human foods and in animal feeds that FDA considers achievable with the use of good agricultural and good manufacturing practices are presented below.

The amount of animal feed commodities used in California has increased substantially over the past decade, making California the largest manufacturer of animal feed in the U.S. In addition, the number of livestock production operations and dairies that mix their own feed on-farm has risen significantly.

Utilize existing Animal Feed Technologies™ (AFT™) to produce animal feed granules and/or blocks that would improve the animal’s ability to produce milk.
The first benefit is that AFT™ serves an alternate nitrogen source by totally/partially replacing the urea used in animal feed (or by converting the urea) to prevent the rapid volatilization of the urea.
To accomplish this, AFT™ is impregnated into/on conventional animal feed or from feed formed via ENCAP Waste Transformation Technology (WTT™).

Animal feed to be given GM labelling   (Site not responding. Last check: )
A GM-LABELLING system is to be introduced for animal feeds sold in Britain to uphold consumers' right to choose, Nick Brown, the Minister of Agriculture, said yesterday.
Speaking in the Butchers' Hall at Smithfield, London, he said: "Animal feeds should be labelled as to whether or not they contain GM ingredients as it is a consumer right to have traceability through the food chain.
He said he favoured three levels of label on feeds: a "strong" label such as "GM-free", which would identify feed that had passed a "very tough" regulatory test, a weaker label such as "non-GM", which would allow for a level of accidental contamination; and a GM-positive label ff such ingredients were present.
